The door moves out 17 inches as it opens.

Oops....sorry just re- measured and came up with 20 inches. So you are probably correct at 21 inches.

The amount of space you need is less than you might think. Just over 21 inches. But one thing I find is that in a tight parking spot, I can open the door except that I'll hit the mirror on the neighboring car.
So, what I've done a couple of times is this: open my window, fold the mirror on the neighboring car, open my door, get out, close my door, unfold the mirror on the neighboring car. If the neighboring car is very tall (like a big SUV or pickup truck), it can be very hard/impossible to reach the mirror while sitting in your i8. On the other hand, in those situations, you can usually sneak out your car anyway... |

Try to pick a spot next to pillar, wall or other immovable object, because the next car in the neighboring spot when you return might just stand a bit closer than the one you positioned yourself to when you came in. Angling the car slightly to the right often helps, too.
