BMW i3 Smartphone App Previewed

BMW teases its future BMW i3 [Official i3 Info] smartphone app on its facebook page ahead of the i3's market launch in 2013.

Looking like something out of the movie Tron, the slick looking app will allow monitoring of the i3's battery charge status, lock/unlock doors from the smartphone, schedule a trip time so that the i3 can thermal precondition ahead of time, and a smart charging mode which presumably sets the i3 to charge when household electricity usage is lowest or most affordable.

There is also a navigation feature with charging station and public transport info.

The application-based integration of mobile devices in the context of BMW ConnectedDrive in the BMW i3 will go well beyond what we know now: Charging, thermal preconditioning, locking and unlocking the car - you will be able to control many different aspects via your smartphone.

Can they actually develop an app for current cars like F10, F30, etc?

Even shit GM cars can be started, opened and located by free app's!

Looks like this app should help with some of the challenges of owning an electric car.

BMW worldwide offers the ConnectedDrive app in many European iTunes stores, chiefly among them, the UK. There's an online tutorial how to download it in the US. The app offers locking, unlocking, remote starting, headlamp flashing, climate control, location services, range statistics, info from the onboard trip computer.

From what I hear, hybrid/electric cars aren't green at all (yet) but they slap "green" labels on them for marketing purposes. Overall "green" probably goes to diesel currently but in the future, electric cars will be greener and more efficient.

I like the direction BMW is going with "efficiency" being the key to "green" - meaning if you make a car light-weight it can increase efficiency and therefore "green"-factor. Efficient = Green (not just using batteries). My 2c.

I tried it. I had to create a new apple ID with UK address (used my company's UK address), entered my cc and downloaded the stupid app. Then it requires some sort of BMW ID/registration (different from BMW USA my account credentials)

It's your BMW Assist account information that you gave to your dealership when you took delivery. There's a specified email and password; he or she should have it.

Do I misunderstand this, or is this BMW really trying to lead you to a train station?
