Sure they are, but the point I was making was about the fact that, to me, a Panamera seems pedestrian next to an i8, yet the pricing is similar. I expected the i8 to be more expensive, a la SLS AMG ( again not comparing performance, just exotic-Ness ).

I will admit though that the base pricing of the Audi R8 goes against my theory.

BMW is creating this car and at this price for a long list of reasons, some which you have all mentioned.. My opinion..

1) Every IHG manufacture now have plans to create some sort of line of 'green' vehicles. As another member mentioned, this is their halo for the i brand. A halo car that creates PR, awareness, and desire. A must have for a competitive luxury market vehicle

2) It's a direct competitor to the R8 e-tron. The R8 e-tron will be a pure electric R8 and should be in the same price range around 2014.

3) Cars like this aren't made to be sold in massive quantities. I'd be surprised to see more than 2,000 of these the first year it's in market (factor in dealer mark up too).

4) If this car does very well, it could be a test for a more large scale full gas variant to compete against the R8 V10, Acura NSX, SL63, and more than likely the Infiniti Skyline (I wouldn't be surprised to see the GTR go to Infiniti..)

So creating this car, this sub brand, is one of the best moves BMW could make in their long term planning..

+1 this car will be well north of 100K, I think BMW was stupid to say 100K+, because it gives the illusion of 100K. I see it being 125K to 150K, a price that will be reasonable.

I think it is a great price tag! I thought this car was going to cost around 200k. Hopefully it is true. i8 might be reachable now

Seriously, if I can get an allocation, I'll put down a huge deposit to hold one. I've already got my Judge Dredd uniform pressed and ready.

They'll make enough to cover their cost without question.

The car has profit written all over it.

Do not doubt it for a minute.

No, you can't.
Always compare apples to apples. In Germany the BASE price on the M5 is 102,xxx€. That is plus options.
Stateside pricing should be about 30-50% less as usual.
Example: My 135i: 52,200€. Same car US Spec military sales :$39,xxx.

This car is beautiful (from pics) but I think I will await the new Jaguar C-X16 to come out later this year - which will be in the same price range (maybe cheaper) as this this i8 and offer similar hybrid supercar technologies

The Jaguar C-X16 (now confirmed to be called the F-Type) is going to be priced between the Porsche Cayman and 911, so not only it's on a completely different price range than the i8, it's a "conventional" car. No comparison at any level with the i8.

As far as the i8 goes, I would drop 120K for that car in a heartbeat. This is a car that truly moves things forward and looks absolutely fantastic in the process.

Also, at 120K it is going to make the new M6 look completely obsolete and even more overpriced than it already is.

While I don't think these will attract a lot of BMW's core buyers, it will draw new people to the roundel who would typically purchase the previously mentioned cars. Also the reliability and peace of mind knowing that the brand is not going to vanish when it's shareholders cut and run is reassuring too.
nor will it spontaneously combust in your garage. i have no doubt they will move these cars.

Hmm, I haven't kept up on the C-X16 development but the last time I looked, it was going to have formula one racing technology (KERS) and hybrid technology under a supercar shaped shell? THAT would have put it in the same league as the i8.
I guess that has changed for the C-X16?

Don't get me wrong the i8 is an amazing looking car but I don't think it will sway enthusiast who WANT a big, FAST GT car like the M6. I think the i8 may target a different crowd and isn't a good comparison to the M6 IMO. The only thing the i8 and M6 may have in common is the price tag and the roundel.

I think $125K is reasonable and I would seriously consider making this my next purchase if it stays in that range.

It will attract the same niche buyer for the most part. People who want a sporty hybrid that looks better than the other junk out there.
The Tesla got crushed in a comparo with a Boxster S. The Boxster not only walked it after 60 mph but embarassed it in handling and track times. So yea, youre going to pay 150K for a car with that looks the part but cant back it up with actual performance.

I'm not defending the quality of the Tesla Roadster and I agree with the points you make but as I mentioned, once the BIG names get into this market it will not be a "Niche" market for long.

I worked for a time management/payroll company and Tesla was one of our clients and I can tell you, that company has a boatload of issues starting with some rather inept management, supply chain issues and overindulgent executives. The i8 will blow the Tesla roadster out of the water.

Fair enough, however the same boxster s that beat the tesla will do the same thing to this upcoming i8. It will embarrass it when it comes to performance and handling and does it while costing half and still getting 30 plus mpg.
The i8 only has a range of 20 miles, which is a joke and doubt the performance will be anything to write home about.
IMO its going to be a poser hybrid. Again, looks pretty good (it's no porsche 918 though) but doesn't have performance to back it up.
