So one year after this release we will have a similar priced ($200k) Tesla roadster out that destroys this thing in every way imaginable.
Yikes. I hope I'm wrong. If not BMW is falling drastically behind and fast in this segment.

Yes they are. Amazing how you can go from class leading to way behind in a matter of a few years.

Wrong! It says "coupe" on the side now in cheesy lettering that looks like it was purchased at pep boys and glued on.... that's what added the hp

I don't know why anyone has to bring up Tesla to show how pathetic an attempt this is from BMW.
Just bring up the NSX. It's roughly the same price. It's been available for a while now. And it crushes the BMW in every aspect of sports car performance. Yes the BMW may get you a few more MPGs but this is a fucking sports car not a Prius.

Our i3 sales have increased with the introduction of 94h. I drove the i3S this week in Portugal along with the new M5. And I can see this addition be equally successful the original i3 is already pretty rapid but S gives a very BMW dynamic feeling to its handling of course what makes i3 great is its unique CFRP structure. You feel the benefits instantly. Truly one of the best modern day BMWs.

Surprising focus on extending electric range rather than total power
Given the oft heard criticism that the i8 looks awesome but does not have the horsepower to back it up, I am a bit surprised that the key change is the improved battery. Surely with some modest tweaks to the ICE it would not have been difficult to bump total HP over 400. Perhaps an 's' version is lurking in the wings for a fall debut. Alternatively, perhaps it is a reflection of BMW's priorities for the i8. Regardless, the i8 is a phenomenal vehicle. Lighter wheels a sweet upgrade.

Are the tires still about 3’ wide?
Yawn. Nice to see the badging is part of the car’s “highlights”. But hey, they painted part of the hood, so....

Remember when there was a new release/article that stated BMW lost all of their BMW i8 designers/engineers to some Chinese Car Company? Well it couldn't be any more painfully obvious until this latest release....
Get them back here please!!! BMW the future of this division as a whole is in the balance... http://www.hybridcars.com/chinese-st...i8-executives/ https://evobsession.com/top-bmw-i3-i...inese-startup/ |

I share a lot of sentiments from both sides of the field on this one. People are either hating the update or praising it. My take:
1) The car is still under-powered. Regardless of what BMW's ideology was in regards to the i8, it's marketed as a "hybrid sports car." Given what is out now in terms of hybrid sports cars (NSX, LaFerrari, P1, 918) the i8 is at the very bottom when it comes to performance. You can't pit a 150K car against a 1million dollar car, but when comparing it to the NSX, it can't hang. I think Acura realized they missed the mark on their pricing, hence the significant discounts that are out now. With those discounts, the car is priced similar to an i8 and even less than, in some cases. 2) The minimal bump in EV range is even more disappointing than the laughable HP upgrade. I initially read on another website that there was a predicted range of 33 miles, which I thought was amazing when I first read it. Going over the official press release here shows that it's a tiny jump. 3) Badging on the side pillar is disgusting. No elaboration here, just plain, flat out, awful. 4) The roadster is gorgeous. I thought it would be tough to beat the styling on the coupe, but the roadster looks amazing. Lastly, I was part of recent BMW market research for the i8 and offered my thoughts on the car concisely. Lets hope there were other i8 owners who offered up similar opinions to sway BMW in a different direction in terms of adding an "S" model or change the ICE to a 4cylinder turbo and reach 450-500 combined HP. |
