Question what’s that thing under the middle compartment?

Hi, bought i8 2017 recently and I love everything about it (although the all electric range is a bit low but then again I bought a hybrid and not a EV lol).

Anyway, I was wondering what this thing in the middle was: (on the left side with an Eject sign).

Would appreciate if anyone could help me out! Thanks! Love this car ❤️

Okay I found out it’s for iPods (???) the old ones with the old connector. Pretty stupid, I was wondering if this could be removed and retrofit with something like a wireless charger mat, something similar to this perhaps?

I was aware of this being available for some 3 series models but - to be clear, it can be retrofitted here in the i8?
