Lightbulb LA Auto Show 2013: BMW i8 North American Premiere

BIMMERPOST NEWS
LA Auto Show 2013: BMW i8 North American Premiere
37
COMMENTS

The production BMW i8 is making its North American premiere at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show, looking striking in Crystal White.

This particular i8 was available for us to sit in and we had some great up-close looks at the many areas of exposed carbon fiber as well as the interior, which you can see in our photos. The interior materials felt good and the seats hugged well. Ingress/egress is difficult though as expected with a design like this. You can tell by the photo of the gentleman. It's great having the exposed carbon fiber to see and touch. The doors feel surprisingly light, even when you already expect it to because of their carbon fiber construction. And regardless of whether you feel gullwing doors are practical, opening and closing it from inside/outside always gives the feeling of an exotic.

The i8 comes to market in 2014 Q2 and is priced at $135,700. It features low fuel consumption (94 mpg) and emissions output and is capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds on the way to an electronically governed top speed of 155 mph.

The post I've been waiting for, awesome!!!

I would to hear anyone's thoughts that gets to sit in the car and explore a little bit.

Will the general public be able to also, or will it be roped off after the press days are over?

What are the white specs on the black part of the rear end and rear window, as seen clearly in photos #15, #16 and #17 - part of the paint or is the car just dusty or something? Curious.

Edit : I guess it's dust as you can see it on the windshield as well...

Also if at all possible can we get some photos of the storage area or trunk? Is there one? Maybe a shot of it with something in there as a reference point.

Damn it I need to go to LA.

Comments have been added above.

I don't think think it will be open to the public to sit in.

Thanks Jason, I figured it was for the press days only.

I took note of the photo of the gentleman with his feet hanging out (#24) - although doesn't seem to be much worse than any low and sleek sports car...

And agreed it does look striking in white, especially with those wheels!

I'll be driving it from California to Florida, so that's why I'm curious about the trunk

If I ever get this car that can do 0 to 60 in 4.4s, then I'm sure that the way I'll drive it, I won't be able to get more than 25 mph

It'll be a while because I'm not first on the list at my dealer but will definitely be posting the journey!

I'm heavy into photography as a hobby so I'll be lugging my DSLR gear along. Even if it means taking less clothes

Looks good really good in white. Patiently waiting for next generation with more hp and even better range. Tech needs to advance a little more before I take the plunge.

Depends on how far you drive and if you keep the battery charged up! The engine needs to run to get that performance, but once you're up to speed, it doesn't need to run at all, depending on the mode and the state of the battery.

Depends on what you want.
The presence of the I8 is hard not to be impressed by imo.
The lines even stading still is screaming fast and modern tech.
The Porsche is, well another Porsche.
The I8 is an icon.

Ok guys, I couldn't hold back. I'm flying to LA on Monday on some business and will then go see the i8 in person at the LA Auto Show.

The production interior and exterior look fantastic! Although, those little wings in the back are going to be a bitch to get under to clean!

Nice car but, if I want to be the devils advocate....

I can buy a 4.4 sec M4 for ~$80K and that's $60K less. At a 94 - 24 MPG difference that a 70 MPG savings if I drive it very carefully. (assuming there is a point to that)

Assuming $4/gal and I drive 50K miles per year, I break even in about 21 years.

lol, I know it's silly but interesting. :-)

The i8 will probably be closer to $130k with a few options and after the $7500 federal tax credit.

All 2014 allocation of the BMW i8 is sold.
If you order today delivery will be in 2015.

The revolution begins.

How many 2014 allocations were there?

I have a deposit down for a 2015 so I already knew I wasn't getting a 1st year car, but just curious what the numbers look like if you can share for the US?

You must have some press pass since the show isn't open yet?

Congrats man, any other thoughts to share?
