I've tried contacting BMW direct and again they haven't got a clue and just direct u back to the dealer

I didn't go for the tracker with my new i8 (since it wasn't needed for reasonable insurance quotes) but when I was ordering up my car, the dealer reconfirmed that I didn't want it since he told me that the £399 in the price list is the factory fitted price. If you want it retro fitted, apparently it requires a lot of work hence the ~£800 cost.

The Trackstar 6 fits fine @ £399 plus £399 for 3 years subscription (I think).

My insurance originally stated a Cat5 tracker but it is not possible to fit these to the i8 as they need access to the ECU. Managed to get a compromise from them to fit the Trackstar 6.

My Trackstar was dealer fitted (or specialist they bring in) at £399 you get free access to the tracking app (for a few days) and I was able to see the test drive the dealer did all of 1.2 miles at 30 mph

My first year of ownership many insurers wanted Cat 5 but not second year shopped around (forget comparison sites) and was quoted £223 + £30 for protected no claims < £75k value > £75k pushed it up to £400 still not bad

Hmmm I am looking to get a CAT6 tracker fitted next week. I can possibly understand CAT5 trackers needing to be more tailored to the i8 but can't see why a CAT6 would run into any problems, sounds like BS from the dealer to me.

Either way I think this company are selling the CAT 6 one that BMW are saying is needed for £195 fitted?

I went with a Trackstar Cat5, fitted at BMW before I picked up the car.

My car's first owner had one fitted and a cursory call to Trackstar verified it was there so saved me paying to get another fitted.

Always worth a call to Trackstar if you're buying s/hand as you may find there's a unit already present.
