Currently, i8 costs Nil. (And we got £5k grant from government.)

New i8 from April is £10 the first year then £140 each year
PLUS another £310 each year for 5 years.

Which after Year 1, is identical to a V12 Ferrari

Utterly retrograde tax system
It's an odd change and I've just read up on it. However in the scheme of things it's still a small cost in comparison to the car and its cost of ownership. The increase is still insignificant compared to the total two year cost of ownership given they are suffering 30-40% depreciation.

And I guess the other thing to be mindful of is that it's road fund licence and a source of income for the treasury, as most of the tax doesn't actually get spent on roads.

Only recently did it become about emissions.

They used it as a way to encourage lower emissions but now they've succeeded they are effectively taxing those who can afford it by putting higher tax on more expensive vehicles.

After what I just heard on the news regarding the Trump 35% tax on BMWs you guys in the US are never going to get the same deal!!!

The amount of tech and research that went into the i8 compared to volume of sale and price point suggests it may be a loss leader for them? So prices will only go up if they feel the concept has legs and they want to make it profitable?

Unless the tech is becoming more mainstream with the likes of Tesla opening up their research to all. So battery and motor costs come down?

That tax is specific to BMWs produced in Mexico.

I'll just assume not. They were specifically speaking of the 3-series.

I spotted a 40k mile i8 pop up on AutoTrader last week for £58.5k. Ad already removed so I guess sold quickly . But there are quite a few between £63-£66k that have been around for ages.
