Question about the cruise control

I'm fairly new to the i8 having covered just 2000 miles. I've found when the cruise turns itself off as you apply the brake, that the brakes (or re-gen) kick in very aggressively and not smoothly like other cars I've driven with cruise.

Is this just std behaviour and a feature of the brakes due to re-gen or does my car have a fault?

I find if you rest your foot lightly on the accelerator as you press the cruise cancel button the jolt is less severe

Hm, if I use the cancel button it just cruises (well, within the same amount as it does with the regen brakes anyways).

Is there a difference in drag, comparing brake -> cruise off, versus cancel -> cruise off ?

I have a bit of that too. But I've noticed it on many other cars as well. What I've observed is that the jerk gets a little stronger if you apply the brakes while the engine is under load, e.g. going up an incline under cruise or accelerating towards the set cruise speed. It's not surprising, as you basically tell the car to simultaneously cut out the engine, which has been pulling, and apply the brakes.

What I normally do - not only in the i8 - is, I cancel the cruise and coast when I see I'll have to slow down. Easier on the car and less wasted energy.
