BMW i3 Leaked Patents. Car to be Unveiled July 29

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Its time to learn a new German Word:

The All-Electric BMW i3 unveiling July 29.

The BMW i3 MCV (Mega City Vehicle) has been leaked in recent Patent applications uncovered by L'automobile magazine.

The full unveiling of the new BMW i3 - BMWs revolutionary new approach to sustainable mobility will be unveiled in July prior to its World Premiere at the IAA in Frankfurt.

As shown by the initial 2011 Concept not much has changed except for the detailing with the recent Concept i3 Coupe taking us further to the actual production model.

As you can see the car is entirely individual from any other BMW model, this is not a 1er nor is it based on an existing BMW.

Everything on this car is developed from the ground up symbolising the market headline "Born Electric".

The i3 will come with eDrive and also be available in REX -Range Extended Engine version for prolonged driving.

The engine begins a new synergy with BMW motorrad and BMW sharing technology with greater emphasis than before.

The i3 will be available in model lines and extensive personalisation options will be available for customers to add that personal touch and exclusivity to their i3.

The BMW i3 is perhaps the most revolutionary and important car in BMWs history as it begins a new dynamic in production , design and technology that will carry over to the next generation of BMW models.

The i3 also asks the most pertinent question?
Can Sustainable Mobility still retain Sheer Driving Pleasure?

Why did they put a lame rear bumper instead of the clearly identifiable BMW i rear bumper of the concept?

Why is the wheelbase shorter and the rear overhang longer than on the concept?

I have figured out what is wrong with this car. While it may still look like the i3 concept, the car itself no longer looks like a concept car. The fact that it looked like a concept car was the one thing I found appealing about it.

I think BMW overplayed the concepts to the point of inevitable disappointment with the production car.

Your post also brings up a question I have had for a while. What does BMW consider to be "Sheer Driving Pleasure" nowadays? Is it the novelty factor of useless toys? The smugness of driving a car that emits 0.001 less g/km of carbon than an equivalent Mercedes?

Yeah and while certain details of the concept naturally had to be watered down due to cost and technical constraints, other details are trivialized apparently without no reason ('fog lights', rear bumper loses the blue lining...).

Yeah, I mean I knew the glass doors weren't going to make it (although they could have done some things to still give it the contrast provided by the dark glass). But things like the extremely unnatural downward kink in the belt-line (which was executed better in the coupe concept) and having four pillars just seem careless. Why were four pillars necessary? Its a small city car with a carbon fiber tub, so I mean they can't really play the structural rigidity card.

This is something I've often wondered. Why do all "green" vehicles have to look so terrible? There's nothing wrong with small cars, but most of the green ones have this weird look as if they were created for a cartoon character. I bet a lot more people would drive these things if this wasn't the case. I have nothing against green technology, but any guy driving something like that is instantly emasculated.

BTW - I'm speaking about the way they are perceived in the US. I realize that much of the rest of the world drives small vehicles and they may not be seen the same way there.

Why BMW can't build something like Tesla Model S? Electric car doesn't have to be ugly.

Probably one the worst things BMW would/will ever do: investing in electric cars.
I say not now.
