So I ordered the stock 21" with 255/50R21 tires, and I'm definitely going with aftermarket 22" summer/daily and 20" winter/off-road setups and selling my OEM 21" (will be available in September for you guys).

I'm going to be putting 30-40k miles a year on the iX, and 21" tires are going to be ~$2k a set which is pretty ridiculous, regardless of the brand either in 255/50R21 or 275/45R21. 255 width isn't really enough rubber for me as I plan to drive the iX pretty hard on corners so I'm looking at at least 285 wide and considering up to 295/305 wide on the 22s. I don't care if there's a 10-15% range hit as I'm ok charging slightly more often and saving 30-60% on tires compared to the 21's.

For 22", I know stock is 275/40R22 with a 22x9.5 wheel ET37, so a +0 fitment of 285/40R22 should be more than acceptable at the same offset and slightly higher tire weight. I'm curious if anyone has gotten far enough to see if 285/45R22, 295/40R22, or 305/40R22 fitments are possible with lower offsets. I would love to be able to do 285/45R22 for more meat. I'm getting custom forged wheels so I'm flexible with offsets.

For 20", I'm looking at having 265/50R20 (many reasonably priced tires at this volume size) or 285/50R20 (heavier) for the winter (studless) or hybrid A/T with 3PM rating setup. Again, would 305/50R20 be possible with lower offsets?

Also, is running a staggered setup just stupid on specifically this platform?

Thanks for everyone's insight and input. I've had aftermarket wheels on all my 10+ cars over the last 20 years so let's set the answers to "Intermediate +" mode.

I'll be interested in hearing the results on this. I'm not sure if anyone has really gotten far along enough to try custom wheels and tires, if so they haven't posted here.

As you probably already know, it's just a question of whether they'll rub when turned to the extremes. I'm guessing that might be a motivation for going staggered.

I like the idea of 265/50 R20 for winters. I've got a winter set for my e-tron that is 255/50 R20. Same bolt pattern, bore, and ET25. So they may sit a bit more flush to the fender, but they're within the 2-3% size range and I think I can make them work until they wear out and then get the 265s on the same wheels. I've had good luck with these wheels on the e-tron and they don't seem to be particularly range sapping despite not being a classic "filled in" EV wheel.

Will definitely update you guys on this. I'm taking delivery 1st week of August and I already have my 20s and 22's on order. Everything should be on by mid-Sept and I can do a 1000 mile review on each.

I'm very curious as to the 22's since i'm getting forged, but non-aero, vs the OEM 21's (I think non-forged?) but aero. We will see whether the reduction in unsprung weight from going forged wins out against the ugly aero designs. As long as I net out 280mi-ish range while going 85-90mpg LA to Vegas (charge at in Baker 200mi out), I'm fine with it.

I know this is an old thread - but what did you end up doing for winter wheels? I've got a set of 285/50R20s from my old X7 that I'm tempted to try on the IX this winter and curious how yours worked out.

This forum is way better than the FB group so I give everyone here much more patience.

So you can definitely fit 285/50R20, but you will need about a +25 offset. You can use the stock 20” iX wheels or you can use your X7 wheels. I’m seeing +35 offset on a stock X7 20” wheel so you will need to run 10mm spacers and slightly longer wheel bolts, but they will work.

I am excited that some who are seeing alternatives to OEM wheels are smartly looking at forged, typically much lighter weight wheels as a compensatory factor to their going with wider/heavier tires.

Options are always good. Personally, my wife and I really like these factory 22”’s.

Unfortunately, the iX OE wheels are actually really light. Both my 3-piece forged 22” (top) and flow-formed/spin-forged 20” (bottom) sets are much heavier than stock.

With EVs and their heavy reliance on coasting and aero, we didn’t use to see this type of thing with ICE’s where the conventional thinking was forged = better. To maximize range and lighten the wheels, they must be MONOBLOCK forged aluminum or magnesium/CF. 2 and 3 piece forged are actually MUCH heavier than stock as evidenced by my 240-250mi range with 3-piece forged 22s.

IMO BMW did a really good job with those stock 22’s.

Just swapped wheels. The OE 22in Bicolor wheels plus Pirelli tires weigh between 75 and 77 lbs. My Asanti ABL 27, 22x9, +32mm, flow-formed wheels with Continental DWS tires weigh between 64 and 66 lbs (bathroom scale weights). This seems to be quite accurate. Listed weight for wheels is 30.3 lbs + 31 lbs for tires and I estimate 3 to 5 lbs for sensors and balance weights. Hopefully a weight saving of around 11 lbs per corner will offset any loss of range due to aero.

I'm looking for tire options for my Ix with stock 20" rims. I live on a steep driveway that ices up, and I want to run Nokian Hakkapelita 10s with studs. They are available in size 275/50 R20 XL which are 30.8 tall and 10.8" wide. Can I run these without any offset issues?
Can anyone suggest a source for lighter 20" rims for winter use ?

The stock offset of the OEM 20" wheel is +28. With this offset, you can run the following tire sizes on the OEM wheel without rubbing:

275/50R20 (matches OEM diameter)
275/55R20 (I run this on my winter set, works great)
285/50R20
265/50R20 (shorter)
255/55R20
