You need a bigger perspective. Nobody says this is a replacement for everyone, but there are lots of people whose typical vehicle needs are short trips, with a lot of stop and go, where an electric makes lots of sense. |

In the UK we get a £5k reduction on list price ( in the case of the i3, around 15%), no congestion charge where it applies (only London) and free public points charging where available. Having said that, purchase cost still somewhat higher than equivalent 'normal' car. The principal is quite right that zero emitting cars ought to be favoured.

I don't honk the i3 is being rolled out for serious penetration into the US market. Like they said this is a global car. It could work well in large European cities and NA cities. LA prob not. NY yeah maybe. Biggest issue will be charging the car in an urban area where no one has a garage. |

How does it not work in LA? The California market is the largest in the us for electric cars and they have the most mature infrastructure built out of anywhere in the country. California will probably account for 15 -20% of all i3's sold in the entire US the first few years. There is NO infrastructure in NY and most people live in apartments so they have no place to charge. New York isn't ready for plug in cars, I know I drive one here. When I go to LA it's like going to Disneyland seeing EV chargers all over the place. I get what you are saying about NY being perfect for the driving characteristics of the i3, but in reality for the vast majority of people it just doesn't work there - yet. If you live on the East Coast no really need to live in a private home or have an apartment or Condo with a private garage so you can install a wall charger because the public infrastructure just isn't there yet.

Customers of BMW’s first electric model can book a conventional auto like the full-sized X5 SUV for several weeks a year for family trips or as a backup. The “add-on mobility” feature, for which BMW hasn’t yet revealed pricing, is part of the manufacturer’s effort to overcome a major concern about electric vehicles, namely getting stuck on the side of the road with a dead battery. |
