Arrow i8 Werkstestwagen up close and personal at BMW dealer...

The other day I was in Munich and stopped by my favorite dealer (BMW owned) just up the street from the Welt. And low and behold they had one of the i8 prototypes on display. I must say the i8 looked pretty cool up close. Even with those skinny 21 inch 155 section tires. The car just oozes the future of autos.

The production BMW i8 will make its official world debut at the Frankfurt IAA show on September 10.

Enjoy,
Dackel

If you compare the BMW i8 concept with the original Vision EfficientDynamics concept which is celebrating its 4th birthday.

You can see physically that the i8 is the VED but on a more realistic footing to deal with production car problems such as crash legislation , packaging , engineering and production.

The longer wheelbase of the VED with its accessible passenger area in the rear is the model for the proposal which is in planning for the BMWi sedan.
Which will be sold alongside eDrive variants of the next generation 5er and 7er.

Very cool, nice photos and great detail. Definitely thanks for posting this. All of the "test like" controls, especially that huge yellow/red knob are interesting to see.

The shape of the car is pure sex on wheels. Can't wait for the camo to shed

Nice. The reveal perfectly coincides with the iPhone 5S and 5C launch. Two things to look forward to on that day..

Thats pretty cool that BMW has a display up before they even officially debut the car. This car is going to be so different from anything else on the road, I wonder how many movies we'll see it in over the next year.

The car at least looks worth the price tag, unlike the tesla.

AND... this car had the optional larger rubber, measuring 195/50R21 at the front and 215/45R21 at the rear.

I believe 155's are standard. Thats what that bare chasiss had mounted on it. I can't remember if it was a square or staggered setup.

That makes no sense because the Tesla is nicely done.

I know this was years ago, so this may be a moot point. But for the record, I think the bare drivetrain was an i3, not an i8. Absence of AWD setup, placement of the battery, really skinny tires would suggest so.

The bare chassis was an i3.

I was talking about the i8's having optional wider tires.

That's how it looked when I saw the i8 for the first time in the wild. We were driving through Death Valley in June 2013 and saw this camouflaged BMW coming the other way.

BMW was heat testing a number of vehicles that day—a good day for it since the temperature was close to 120°F. In addition to the i8 we spotted an M3 and an X5 all in camouflage.

We saw the i8 first and were impressed by the styling. Two years later, we got one.
