Thumbs up BMW i8 Sold out for 2014. Nearly 10,000 Orders for i3

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Via Reuters:

(Reuters) - Luxury carmaker BMW has orders for nearly 10,000 of its i3 electric cars, the first of which were delivered in Germany last week, the company's global sales chief, Ian Robertson, said at the Los Angeles Auto Show on Wednesday.

Robertson also said the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car due to be introduced in mid-2014 has sold out for its first year of availability. He did not say how many the company will sell in that first year.

Scott26 said the same thing in another thread. Thanks for posting the article. Too bad they won't say how many are sold, but it's gotta be 300 or so for the US at less than 1 per dealer allocations.

Didn't see the other thread but did look around to find if it was posted already. Missed it!

If dealers are only getting 1 or so each then the numbers are indeed quite low. I would have thought they would try to get a production run at a few thousand minimum. Maybe they want to get just a few hundred on the road for real world testing before they put 1000's out there in case fixes or recalls are needed. So much new tech in this that its bound to have a few kinks here or there.

Sorry that's not what I meant at all - Scott mentioned it in the la auto show thread I think, in one of the posts, not in a dedicated thread.

I was more implying that we now have a source to backup what Scott said in the other thread, which is always a good thing.

Wow. No kidding.

Do we even have an ordering guide? I wonder if they just mean "We have enough deposits to sell out an entire year's worth of allocs."

I think most of the production capacity is going to i3 builds. They share some components and I'd be willing to bet there's a lot more money to be made prioritizing i3 production over i8. Everything I've heard points more to the supply constraints than any marketing/beta test agenda. An article today that they have to ramp up carbon production to meet demand for passenger cells for the i3.

Ah, got it. Yeah, definitely not sold out in my book, then.

Eagerly awaiting a DOG. And yes, I realize it's a bit early. We'll probably see an ordering guide in a couple months.

I hope we get more than 1 per dealer. My first allocation is already spoken for. I'd like to get the chance to drive the darn thing and I can't/won't drive a sold unit in respect to the buyer

Germans make very conservative forecasts, so this isn't surprising....

we have a couple reserved i8 orders last time I checked. Not sure about the i3's.

I was hoping of maybe snagging a i8 down the road for myself but could be very difficult if they are always sold before we even get them!

I seem to recall BMW saying it had 8000 orders for the I3 some time ago so a rise to only 10000, now that the cars are in dealers showrooms in Europe isn't exactly great progress. The two in my local dealer always seem to be in the showroom rather on test drives with all those thousands of people BMW claim want to drive the car.

Oh I thought an i8 had my name written on it - guess
I would have to throw tons of money at it if I really wanted one --- -_-
Let the guinea pigs have at it.

I don't know how accurate this is but a few dealers around San Diego told me they were expecting a $100,000 mark up for the i8 (this was a few weeks before you could actually order one) I can't wait to see the actual numbers and see how much over sticker people ended up paying.

I believe the US MSRP for the i8 was ~$137,000 but I have no idea how much options cost.

Have it in writing with the owner of the dealership that he's selling it to me for MSRP (they never charge over sticker and he told me about the first M1 they sold), only conditions were that they get to keep it the week they get it for their "Grand opening" of the "i" part of the dealership, roped off of course. He gets right of first offer if I decide to sell.

The product manager of BMW "i" stated at the LA auto show that they come with nearly everything standard at the base price price, "very few options." Basically said "pick your color, wheels, interior and you're good to go" which makes me hope for that price they're just making HUD, surround camera/radar, cruise, etc. standard and the only options might be the already announced carbon-fiber wheels and, in other countries, laser headlights...maybe a upgraded stereo.

That's awesome if you can get it at MSRP, like I said that's just what a few dealers around me told me. I'm not in the market for the car at all, I was just asking out of curiosity since I'm friends with a few BMW salesmen but I was having a hard time believing that $100,000 over MSRP figure.

They should not allow test driving a sold car... Ever.

We have 9 people committed at $100k over for the i8. I was told we will get 1 allocation per quarter but not sure how credible that is.
