My key concern with this thread is that there is a lot of "noise" about A/C failures on i8s whereas like every other car on the road, there is an age issue here in terms of seals and the need to keep the AC system gas charged. Yes, some pre LCI i8s had a compressor issue but most (if not all) should have had that fixed by now. The key thing is that every i8 is now at least four years old from its point of manufacture with some being ten years old. I would absolutely expect that they would have need to have been re-gassed at least once during that time. Seals degrade over time and leaks can happen more frequently.
I walked away from an i8 at a main dealer where the AC was not working since the main battery cooling also relies on the refrigerant gas circulation and I was worried as to how the battery may have been affected by this. As others have said, leave the AC on (so you can quickly detect if AC performance is declining) and have it regularly checked every few years. |

Glad to see this is still active. I just brought mine to the dealer and they arent aware that the regas can solve the problem. They claim that the system should not have low gas if it is still cooling the air in the car. Was your ac blowing cold air?

No the reason I took mine in was that the blown air wasn’t chilled at all.
I think by law they have to do a test first to check for leaks. Was surprised when they just said all done and fine! |

That's interesting, I had mine checked, and it had even .15lbs more than the stock, they pulled 1.4 from the system and the book states 1.385 is what the system needs.
So apparently mine still makes that noise that some has posted here, the sound of a portable 12v air compressor pump used for emergency road side flat tires. I doubt BMW sold this car with that sound from new, so it is maybe a sign the compressor is starting to fail and eventually leads to the metal fragments breaking off when it overheats. I had them order the latest version compressor just to be safe so I am not worried to turn on the AC and end up with a $15k repair bill. My only concern is they don't find any metal fragments already in the system when they pull it next week. |

I had the same noise, but it was gone after the AC refil. Still, I decided a couple of weeks later to change the compressor… USD/EUR/CHF 2500 is actually a decent price, as we know that this is issue will be completely solved forever, and the costs are fully in line with the costs of normal issue of any 6-10 year old BMW.
I want to point as well, that the i8 is a very reliable car (at least for me, from 2014). Beside the AC compressor, and electric heater (mine is still working), I never had other major issues. |
