Extended Warranty from BMW
Hi all. I just bought a 2015 i3 BEV, previously having had a 2015 i3 REX. My new (used) car has 11,100 miles on it, and exactly 2 years left of new car warranty and 1 year of CPO. I have never purchased an extended warranty, but was lured into it in this case, extending my coverage to 5 years/75k miles for $1500.
What do you all think? Worth it? I have 60 days to cancel if I change my mind. I'm basically bettering that in years 4 & 5 of ownership, I'll have repairs exceeding $1500, and full coverage in year 3 when a few things might fall through the gap of CPO warranty. There are fewer things to go wrong in a BEV, but we all know what kind of bills can result from a trip to the BMW service department. I'm thinking about this car almost like a phone--a 4 or 5 year old phone is going to fail--just a matter of when and how? |

Sounds like a good deal for some reassurance... I have the 14 rex at 48k miles and so far about half my repairs have been unrelated to the rex unit.
A CPO bev with low miles and long warranty is a good combination, amazing car way undervalued. |

So you bought +1 year / +25K miles extended warranty for $1.5K? Quote:
Your comments about year 3 make no sense. Please clarify the terms, and source of your extended warranty. Sounds like it is NOT underwritten by BMW? True. Quote:
And no, we don't have any data on year 5+ i3 service bills. a

Yes, you're correct that BMW has a 4 year/50 k warranty, but my car is a 2015. As I said in my post, it has exactly 2 years left of factory warranty. This means I purchased 2 extra years of full coverage, not 1 like you wrote. Year 3 of ownership for me will be covered by the CPO warranty...the BMW CPO warranty covers most, but not all things, that the original 4 year new car warranty covers...in my case the extended warranty would fill in any of those gaps. And yes, it is a BMW warranty. Yup, no data yet on 5-7 year old i3's, but I think we can extrapolate that BMW's are not the cheapest cars to fix? I don't expect i3's to be immune from failing as they age...my only question is is it worth the gamble to prepay for the warranty for peace of mind and possibly coming out ahead financially in the end? |

If BMW OEM warranty is 4 yrs/50K, and you describe the extended warranty terms as "5 years/75k miles for $1500".... ... you tell me what the delta is !? When do you think the "5 years" count starts? If not sure - read the fine print! It's, usually, date of sale. Quote:
If you need emotional support - all other considerations are null and void. Insurance industry exists on selling "worries", so pay up and relax! By definition, you are looking at the loosing end of the "insurance gamble", else insurance companies would be going out of business right and left. In fact, many fly-by-night aftermarket companies do just that, so it's reassuring that you bought one from BMW direct (it was BMW branded, not just 3rd party fluff bought from a BMW dealer, right?). Your car is second year from i3 MY introduction, so historical data is sparse to nonexistent. BEV i3's are, mechanically, rather simple. Good luck with yours! a

The 5 year/75k miles start the day I purchased the car, so goes through 6/2023. Again, like I said in the original post, we're talking about coverage in years 4 & 5 of my ownership. And I also said "warranty from BMW".
"If you need emotion support"...what the heck?!? Of course insurance underwriters are usually on the winning end. I don't think wanting to discuss the pros and cons of having an unusual car with unknown long term reliability as this relates to the cost/benefit of an insurance policy is that crazy. |

Warranty clock always starts on the original vehicle "in-service" date. See page 3 of the BMW PDF below: https://www.bmwusa.com/content/dam/b...t_Brochure.pdf Have fun either way. a

I thought that BMW cut the factory warranty to 3 years back in 2015?
Also, I do know that after, I think August 2015 that BMW warranties/comp service is no longer transferable to secondary owners.

i3 battery warranty is 8 years /100K miles. Then there are "Rust Perforation", "Roadside assistance", and "Care" warranty and service plans, and those vary from one BMW model to another model. Some are transferable to 2nd owners, some are not. Gotta read the fine print on each one - it's a warranty jungle out there! More info below, section 04.2: https://www.bmwusa.com/vehicles/bmwi...-extender.html Quote:
The above statement is true w.r.t. "service plan" for M3/4 cars. BMW factory warranty is always 100% transferable. a

BMW warranty on 2017 and later model years are 36K miles or 3 years
also maintenance does not cover brakes and wipers - makes no sense to me but I didn't care because the i3 will not likely need either for 3 years anyway https://www.bmwusa.com/explore/bmw-v...mate-care.html |

afadeev, you are trying so hard to be right about everything, but you are not reading my posts carefully enough to make accurate observations. Like I said (again), I had exactly 2 years of warranty left when I purchased the car (purchased on the exact 2 year in service anniversary date). So, that leaves me with 2 years of factory warranty, and 3 years of extended warranty...which makes 5 years and 75,000 miles. Sigh. Let's just let this go. This nitpicking is not helpful or useful to the thread for anyone weighting the pros and cons of the subject.
