I3 Range Extender

When having the range extender does the gas power the heat in the vehicle like other plug in hybrids such as Volt, Optima Plug-In?

No.
Everything in the car runs off the electrical battery.

REX (Range EXtender engine) is an electricity generator, and it automatically kicks in when the main EV battery is drained to 6% level.
In the rest of the world there is a manual option to turn it on whenever the driver wants (once battery charge drops below 75%), but that menu is not enabled in the US. There are ways to force it to become visible via "coding".

In other words, you can drive forever without engaging the REX engine.
It will, occasionally (bi-monthly?) execute a maintenance run and turn itself on for 5-10 minutes to lubricate the internals.

HTH,

Heat in the i3 is provided by a HeatPump.. Does not come from the Rex.. And I have never noticed excess heat from the Rex entering the vehicle when its running.

I think only the BEV has a heat pump. The REX doesn't. I learned that after I purchased my i3 REX. The heat pump goes where the small gas tank is on the REX.

I believe the HeatPump (or whatever they use, Resistance Heater) is located in Front on the REx
