To all i8 owners... Very important.

There is a recall for the i8 for fire risk.

The affected vehicles were built from May 16, 2014 to September 16, 2014.

Just want to give my fellow forum members a heads up about it.

They were contacting owners directly that may be affected and having them come in for a check. Mine was fine.

Good thing you were not one of those who were affected by this recall. I also read somewhere although the fix is free, it will be a long wait for owners since BMW will have to remove the tank, which is very time consuming.

Mine was replaced. It's a very simple procedure that takes an experienced tech 4-6 hours. On my old tank, July 30 build, there was excess flux and minor excess solder.

The schadenfreude in your quickly debunked observation about the lengthy waiting time to replace the fuel tank was pretty obvious.

Now to add to your schadenfreude, at the time that they replaced my tank (early November) there were only 18 tanks in the US. I know of 2 owners that had to have the replacement tank sent back as it had the same problem.

On top of that, a friend of mine that was supposed to take delivery this week, has his car now "held at port" pending inspection of the tank. While his car falls outside the recall production dates, they are inspecting all tanks. The rationale is that while the car was built after the recall window, the real issue is "when was the tank made" and does it have the weld problem?

Fuel Tank

Mine fell in the recall window but was inspected and fine. It will be interesting to see even how many cars really even had the issue.
