Delivery Stop on MY 2013 I12 (i8) Fuel Tank Problem (Recall)

FYI - Released today:

A Delivery Stop has been issued on certain Model Year 2014 BMW I12 (i8) vehicles. The bolt for attaching a ground cable at the bottom of the fuel tank may not be welded correctly, which could result in a fuel tank failure. Although, the actual failure rate is extremely low, every i8 vehicle in your inventory should be inspected prior to delivery. A Service Information bulletin (B16 14 14), which includes details of a fuel tank inspection, will be published shortly.

Is that the fuel capacity? Very cool!

I think that would get a whooping 50 miles in my M3

Got a call about this today. Said it consists of an hour for inspection and three hours to repair if they find a defect.

He asked if I had "smelled fuel" before. I said that in 3600 miles I hadn't smelled it once...but I didn't tell him about the hatch sensor that sometimes thinks the hatch is open (which prevents it from opening when closed), or that the pinch sensor on the driver's window is too-sensitive (retracts when nothing is in the way) which are way more annoying.

I guess I'll get it all looked at together.

My i8 arrived at Port Hueneme Thursday night, October 30th. There have been several problems and it's not delivered yet. First, a pressure sensor in the fuel tank. Then a battery problem. And now supposedly the problem with the exterior of the battery case. A problem they are taking their time looking at. Maybe tomorrow or Wednesday. Who knows? Who cares?

I've done everything I could do to speed this process up, but no one at BMW seems to care.

And it's endemic. Bosch took a week to contact me about installing my charging unit. And then 4 days before the Bosch-selected electrician called me. (I'm in Malibu.) The electrician called Sunday night. I told him he was a little late. My electrician had installed the unit that morning.

But the car is still delayed with no ETA. Does anyone have ideas?

Yeah, I don't expect anything. With how much I'm driving it, I would hope I would notice a fuel leak by now.

Slight change of subject, do you find it irritating that in order to go to Sport Auto from manual you have to flick gear lever to right (Comfort Auto ) then left to Sport Auto. Upsets stability momentarily. I liked the Auto/Manual button on Ferrari 458/FF etc. Also of course with both M4 and i8 paddles move with steering wheel, not fixed to column

Every other paddle-shift car I've driven lets you go back to auto by holding the "+" paddle. So yes, very annoying to have to flick the stick back and forth. Also, I think the car should shift to S6 when you're not driving aggressively above 50-60mph. If I just want to use sport to charge the battery I have to manually shift to get to sixth gear so I'm not cruising in a 55mph zone in 5th, wasting more gas than I need to. Then if I come to a stop after cruising 15-20 minutes, I come close to banging off the limiter because its still in manual.

My car is still on a repair hold and BMW ain't talking. You'd think they learned something after BMW of North America, Inc. v. Gore, 517 U.S. 559 (1996), but apparently not.

Does anyone know why BMW is holding up deliveries of i8s? Mine has been in port almost 2 weeks. And counting.

Which port? If it's Bremerhaven 10-14 days is normal, if it's a US port, that is excessive, VPC has been taking 2-3 days for most.

Pt. Hueneme.

I got Customer Relations involved. As of 12:30 pm PST today I was told the car needed a part and that it would be ordered from Germany this week.

I went out tonight and when I got home at 8:15 there was a message from my dealer (Bob Smith in Calabasas) that the car had arrived just before close, without any prior warning/announcement. I got a follow up call from my sales rep at 8:25 that the car was, indeed, there.

So I am going over tomorrow at 7 am to pick it up. (I'm dropping off my 650i Gran Coupe. The driver's seat vibration mode makes a twanging sound.) PDI will take 25 minutes. The financial transaction won't take very long.

Actually old news. Affects i8s built before September 17th. Mine was built the 24th but was still checked at the VDC for the problem.
