Sour Grapes?

Writer seemed to wake up with a bad taste in his mouth. Strange how his report is so contrary to ~90% of the others.

There are actually two reviews. The second one is pretty good. The first writer wanted an M engine in the i8. Bottom line is he doesn't get it.

always going to be a kill joy somewhere.

The guy refers to an Alfa 4c. How is that relevant in the same article as the i8? The Alfa 4c is a slightly evolved concept of a Lotus Elise that came out in 1994. Drive a 4c around every day and you will need a good chiropractor and aspirin for your headaches.

A barely evolved go kart for £55k? He finds it a good deal? In the UK, you can get a Lotus Elise supercharged for £25k which is extremely close to the USP of the 4c... You can look everywhere for an alternative to the i8 and you will struggle... Closest? LaF, macca P1, porsche 918... errr 5 to 10x the price thank you very much.

The author is a bit of an idiot wanting to attract attention by taking a polar opposite view to anyone else.

His writing comes off as a very entitled "I'm an auto-journalist/blogger and everything I say is important, witty, and implicitly true." There's a "I'm so over it, it's not even funny" air about the tone.

Quote:
Every BMW should get an interior at least this nice baseline, which says more about the state of BMW interiors than the quality of the i8’s cockpit.
So edgy.

It sounds like most of his problems are with his cognitive dissonance about how the car looks vs. how it behaves in Detroit winter weather.

Thankfully, after one article I know he has nothing meaningful to contribute to the already crowded company of talented auto writers.

"It is not a groundbreaking vehicle, however. Alfa makes a carbon fiber sports car that’s half the price of the i8. The powertrain is not far removed from that of the Chevy Volt, give or take a motor or two. Interior space, performance and electric range are far eclipsed by the Tesla Model S P85. True hybrid hypercars like the LaFerrari and Porsche 918 are vastly more capable."

What an idiot speaking now. Alfa is a go-cart nothing to do with refined i8. At this point you can also say that F40 had CF structures in 1987. So BMW is over 25 years behind Ferrari? Or is there something else to take into account now?

Chevy Volt? Yeah, all the same, goes 0-60 sub 4?

Tesla....great again, family sedan in comparison to i8? A smart move.

And like already commented, finally, crying after LaFerrari & 918 performance that's 6-12x times more expensive.

I can always go to say golf master winner that I'm equally good player since I have done birdie on every hole of this course. Like he just did. But better not to remember that I needed 18 different days to do that...
