Nope, mine is fine as well, don't know anyone with an issue, didn't hear anything from the other i8 club members.

But honestly, I think this is a wild goose chase. Always the same people post their issue, mix in a little unrelated, damage induced problems from others and create a click bait title. Suggest to relax and enjoy the car. Last edited by Leto1701; 09-28-2020 at 02:14 AM.. |

I don’t think it’s click bait and I’m sure it’s a issue with a few, just no biggy.
Sure there are only 20K i8s sold around the world but there are currently 165000 i3’s sold with, as I understand it, the same components. The i3 is generally a load cheaper than the i8, so we would be hearing about a lot of written off, uneconomic to repair, and thus well publicised i3 AC problems from their angry owners - if it was a common problem. I have a 2019 i8 Roadster with 10,000 miles, and a fair amount of those miles are with the AC on.
No issues so far, except for a Turbo Charging Cord recall that has been a year waiting for BMW to send. The charging cord that I received with the car has been working fine. Unrelated question: What does the "LCI" designation refer to? |

I am not sure on how many I8 owners has seen or checked out this forum, so far there are only less than handful that had reported/ written or known of anyone who experienced this issue along with this crack windshield mystery.

Early i3 models seem to have this occasionally. Looking at realoem, they've had about 10 AC compressor revisions on the i3 at this point. I haven't seen any 2016 or later i3s have the issues.
Are the i8s you're seeing with this issue early cars, or spread across all years?

Sorry for dragging up an old thread, but i have this issue (I think).
My AC is making a whirring and whooshing noise as shown in my Youtube video (may need headphones to hear better). I am hoping it just needs a re-gas. I dont have any codes or lights on the dash. Not sure if the AC is blowing cold as the ambient temp here is only 12 deg. https://youtube.com/shorts/6HscR32Bk...LYG6AXJl6_pnCo |

A possible solution for this issue.
I may have an answer for this, which could put your minds at ease a little.
I explained this on my thread, but will post here too, and in the hope that Pat will put an update on his video as a lot of people are going off his video as being gospel, even though it didn't even happen to Pat himself. I bought my i8 3x weeks ago and it is a 2014 model with 24,000 miles on the clock. A few days ago i had the dreaded fast ticking noise (sounds like a tyre inflator you plug in the cigarette lighter) from under the bonnet/hood, and hit Google and Youtube which lead me to Pat and this very forum. Here is a video that i took so you can hear what mine was like. https://youtube.com/shorts/nU3YzbOCc...rbumDm773EtAmT Naturally, looking at Pats video, i had thoughts of my car being off the road for some time and also costing a fortune to fix (for the garage i bought it from of course). Everywhere i looked, internet, social media, Youtube etc, all said the same thing... 'Your AC is broken and needs changing. Stop the car immediately or you could cause lots of damage costing MANY thousands of pounds' I bet many people who said this had watched Pats video or heard of people who ha watched it. I spoke with the garage i got it from, who were quite happy to fix it no matter what, but wanted me to take it to get re-gassed first to rule that out. I took my car to a specialists about 17 miles away and let the guy listen to it, and he immediately said that it was low on AC gas/fluid. He said the ticking noise is a solonoid opening and closing due to the lack of pressure. The i8 should have 630 grams of AC gas/liquid inside of the system, with a certain amount of oil. Of course if this level drops then so does the oil, which can cause issues. The machine they use takes out the gas from my system, which it measures, then it cleans the pipes/system out of condensation and refills it with the correct amount of gas/oil. The machine took only 70 grams from mine, instead of the 630 that should be in there, so was 560 grams short. Now a possible reason for this, is either its totally normal (if it has not been re-gassed for some time), or it has a leak, which i may not find out for a several months. He recommends that cars are re-gassed every 2 years, to make sure the oil is in top condition and the gas quantity is where it should be. Also to run your Aircon at all times. I drove home (plus an extra 30 miles) using, a mixture of electric only, comfort and sport and the noise had completely gone and it also appeared to run better too (but probably a placebo effect). I wonder how many people this has happened to, who have watched Pats video and unnecessarily spent a few thousand replacing the AC due to being scared about a complete failure when all it needed was a re-gas. Now dont get me wrong, i am not blaming Pat as he is the guru of all that is the i8 and love his videos and without question will believe what he says (which could actually be the problem), but on this occasion he may have got it wrong by listening to other peoples experiences and reporting them like its gospel. Also, the ticking/tapping is obviously not supposed to happen, so leave it long enough without checking and you may cause lots of irreparable damage which could amount to thousands as the oil in the AC system is obviously low too. I just hope that this helps someone. On the same note, people reporting that its the 2014/15 cars that are prone to this could simply be due to them being older and if gone unchecked the aircon could quite simply be less in the system and the oil degraded due purely to age. Hi all, interesting thread and everyone’s experiences are different I guess.
I have just noticed that my air con doesn’t run cold now that the weather is getting warmer and although I did intermittently switch it on over the winter, maybe I haven’t run it enough? No noises thankfully but worried that the seals may have now cracked. It’s a 2015 car with 29k miles. It is going in for a re gas (first one ever) and I guess Will just have to wait and see if it passes the leak test first? Any advice on what to expect please? No dash warning lights but must have leaked out somewhere or could it have just naturally got low? |

Ihad same issue which was due to low coolant gas (it seems it’s a natural process and gas is reduced over time, hence this should be checked/refilled every 5-6 years or so)… on top I got the AC compressor replaced. Since this service, all works fine

Basically, I had a new elec heater fitted when I got the car under warranty. It’s out of warranty now and it’s gone again! Not really bothered me and wonder if it’s connected with the aircon not blowing cold after what you have said? There is obv a weak point on these elec heaters to fail again. The part was only guaranteed for 2 years ands it’s way over that now unfortunately. I tried arguing but they cam up with the usual excuses. We will see what the main dealer says after the re gas then? No noises so was hoping it just needs a re gas as never been done. |
