Guesses have it between 40 and 43k. Then there is a $7,500 federal tax credit so final cost could be somewhere around 33

Is that U.S. pricing? If so; add a $5-8k premium on that. And I doubt Canadian federally government will honour $7500 rebate

It hasn't been such a short time frame. BMW has been developing them since 2008. They have as test mules in real world testing for over a year now. They just held back from showing us the concept vehicles for a while. It may seem like they were only recently conceived, but that's not the case.

The US has a $7,500 federal tax incentive for plug in cars. I really don't know if Canada has anything like that.

60 KPH is only about 37 MPH. So, not so great.
But, speed isn't the i3's point.

The I8 is beautiful, but the I3 makes me wanna throw up. I don't understand how anyone likes this car. A golf tdi is pretty much as efficient, 10 times better looking and you won't have to pay a $8,000 battery overhaul when the batteries die in the I3. I guess "everyone likes to be DIFFERENT" nowadays.

lol i always wondered if the full glass look would make it to production, seems a little non private. tinting will be a must.

Glass doors won't be on the production car, neither will the glass roof, it will be entirely carbon fiber. The rear hatch may very well retain the all glass look though.
I was at the New York City Press Event this week and did a write up about it if anyone is interested:

You are mistaken about the "i" cars being "affordable". That has never been the claim. BMW is a premium manufacturer. These cars are all carbon fiber with aluminum frames and have the latest electronics, they will not be cheap. The "i" division is a sub-brand like the "M" cars are. They are premium cars that are marketed to buyers that are concerned about sustainable personal transportation, both in manufacturing the vehicle and maintaining it. There is a large(and growing) market for this and BMW would be foolish(luckily they are not) to ignore it. Don't worry, you can continue to "murder the planet" as you say. Nobody's taking your oil burner away from you.......yet

unless they'll price it in a low $20g's nobody will spend that kind of $ on i3, if guesses are $40g's for states it'll be 50g's in Canada, there's NO WAY they will sell that....who is going to buy that over 5series or 335i? plus that thing looks so ugly are you kidding me ...

what market are you talking about? I see that chevy volt commercial 10 times a day but I have yet to see one on the road... they are out of their mind pricing it at "starting price" 42g's in canada, few options and you're at 50g's.... I just did a lease quote on chevy volt, with $3000 discount it's $1010/month for 36months... that's more then my 5er with navi

i8 wasn't supposed to be cheap. Considering the development costs and the result, an estimated $160K is not bad (but, yah, I can't afford it). I don't think they designed it in the vein of the 1M (hot item on a papuper's development budget).

The i3 appeals to me. My commuter/beater is a Suzuki SX4. It has AWD and gets 30 mpg, manual etc. I think the i3 would be a great commuter vehicle, though the range is not all that impressive.

SO now you're comparing a chevy to a BMW in the premium market? Of course you don't see any in Toronto, they haven't been available for sale there. GM only released them in about six states here in the US because they couldn't make them fast enough for a full release. Most people here in the states have had them on order for over a year before they get it. They are all pre-sold.

Still- I never brought up the Volt, most Chevy customers aren't used to paying 40k+ unless it's a huge SUV or a Vette. BMW customers are, it's a premium brand. Maybe you don't factor in sustainability when you look at your next vehicle but whether or not you believe me there are a lot of people that do and that segment is growing. Why do you think BMW is right now installing a wind farm to power the Lepzig plant or why they are built their carbon fiber plant in Lake Moses, WA which uses 100% hydro power for all of it's electricity. Why do you think they are starting to use recycled materials for vehicle interiors? BMW is one hell of a smart company, they know where the market is going. Recently, BMW CEO Dr. Norbert Reithofer said "In the future, premium will also be defined by sustainability" These two cars are the start of that philosophy.

I don't see the i8 every getting to serious production unless either 2 things happen -
The price goes way up in order to retain the most noticeable features of the concept, or
those features disappear and the car get's dumbind down to something more ordinary.
The 3rd and perhaps most likely scenario is that they hand produce a very small number at a loss as an R&D/marketting exercise.
