Its a different kind of response to a sports car in conventional terms. That what makes the i8 so unique.

Porsche version is $850k
Actually, I think you'll find that the Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid has 416bhp, 0-62 in 5.5 and returns 91.1mpg - all not too dissimilar to the i8 albeit in a different body shell.
Expect this drivetrain in a 911 and then you'll see where it blows the i8.
The 850k for a 918 is an entirely different performance league.
My guess is that Porsche will be developing this for the 911 as an option as will Audi in their upcoming R8 model.
In my opinion, both of these will leave this "ugly duckling" behind in both performance and looks.

I want to like it but I just can't understand the design. The hood scoop kills the front for me. The back looks a mess. The side profile not bad. The blue trim is horrible. I feel BMW could have done so much better than this design. I know some people like it, some love it and some hate it. I'll have to see it in person to see if I just dislike it or really just hate it.

I appreciate they really seemed to try something a little different from everything else that is out there but just missed the mark IMHO.

For this money I'd prefer the M5 100 times over.

Wow you really have it out for the i8, eh?

The Panamera hybrid is slow. Even the Panamera S doesn't come close. The GTS does, though. Many people also really hate the looks, although I'm not one of them. I almost bought a Panamera GTS last year.

In the looks department, don't even kid me, no comparison.

A Porsche 911 hybrid will possibly be more expensive than an i8 without any of the uniqueness.

The Audi will still be running a body design that's been around for a while, and the i8 performance is already ballpark to the R8 V8, if you compare the numbers as a whole.

I would not hesitate to choose i8 over any of the cars you mentioned, and if you think it's an ugly duckling that's your opinion, but to many it's a gorgeous one of a kind design in today's automotive landscape.

As you concede, and as stated continuously, the 918, LaFerrari, and P1 are in proper supercar or hypercar territory and are not in the same league as the i8 - they are 3 of a kind in a league of their own, with the prices to match.

The gas station pics were taken at the Döttinger Höhe gas station ( http://www.doettinger-hoehe.de/Dottinger_Hohe/Home.html ) across from the 'Ring. You can see the Audi banner on the BTG(Bridge to Gantry) on the straight just before the tourist entry/exit point for the 'Ring.

The shots of the white i8 looks like the streets around the FIZ(BMW's R&D center) a few blocks up from the BMW Welt.

FYI... just because a car is RHD doesn't mean its being driven in the UK(or other RHD markets).

The reason why the i8 has the words: "Hybrid test vehicle" on the doors is bc it is a German law in case the cars were to become involved in a accident for the fire dept/first responders would know it is not a normal car. Also on the back of every German prototype it is written: "Werkstestwagen" so the public knows the car is not forsale. Sometimes the car manufactures use the word: "erprobungsfahrzeug" but you do not see that often.

Thanks for the reply and the answers to my questions. In the recent photos of the Sophisto grey car, I noticed there was a small antenna on the roof just above the passenger side door. In the front shot of that same car, you'll also see a small, red box that also appears to be some electronic gear. Any speculation on what they are for? Possibly for testing on the Ring?

The small antenna is for "car to car" radio transmissions when the test cars are in a convoy of cars. The drivers will use a ear bud and hands free radio(like in that one picture that was posted).

The red box is for testing at the 'Ring for vehicle speed and GPS data. Its very common to see at the 'Ring when the big car companies are testing there.

Also... some times you will see a prototype with a small(4 inch long pipe, maybe 1 inch in diameter mounted on the rear of the roof, like on this i8, see RR of roof panel). Inside is a small "hot wire" that can tell the driver the true vehicle speed(it has a wire that runs inside the rear of the cabin). BMW uses this when testing different diameter tires on pre production cars to determine what size tires to go with.

My point exactly!
There's no replacement for displacement!

So just get a Mustang Shelby GT 500 and call it a day, only $60k

Or a C63 AMG with 6.3L NA engine.

The i8 is not about displacement, so it's not relevant to the discussion.

Needs quad exhaust tips and a V10! Kidding, I'm aware that thats not what its about. However, I love the look of the thing! It's incredible.
