These already have the US license plate plastic surrounds on them, that's a first I think. Perhaps these are closer to actual production cars. Very exciting, thanks for posting this.

Must be the event Chris Harris was talking about. And print needs more lead time so it's probably for the July/August issue when the car comes out.

Great find @drlonline, It's a great pic, and as you say, I've also never seen that many i8s in one place before.

Hopefully we'll soon see more of these sort of things and also more reviews on how it drives etc.

Here's another shot of the same event. These were taken at Nikita's restaurant, Malibu.

@drlonline is this event today? You should cruise by there and crash the party Tell them you're with the press and see if they'll let you take one for a spin, haha!

I thought about it, but it's a bit of a hike from where I live, so I imagine it would be over by the time I got there. Not even sure where the event was centered, as I understand the restaurant where the photos were taken was the lunch stop. Can't wait to read the reviews that come out of this, though.

One final photo I grabbed from Instagram taken today near Malibu. Looks like the i8's had a fun day mixing with some of the locals.

The i8 is looking great along with the McLaren

I cut my teeth riding motorcycles in those canyons. Love Malibu. Used to take Mulholland Drive to Sunset Blvd (via Coldwater Cyn or Beverly Glen), then Sunset to PCH, then usually either Topanga Cyn, through Mulholland Highway over to the 23 (Decker Cyn) into Thousand Oaks just to get to work every day. Nothing like it. Piuma Road is my favorite canyon road in Malibu.

Perfect place to do some press review drives of the i8.

Those tire marks were NOT Created by the i8. Or the McLaren.

They were there before I got there.

I was driving that i8.

I write for Roundel, the BMW Car Club of America's national magazine.

My article will appear in a future issue. (My editor doesn't like be giving away the punchlines!)

Bottom line, I want one. It's fun to drive in the twisties, and it's a quiet city car around town. Yes, it cost as much as two normal cars, but you two very different personalities in one parking space. With a push of a button it goes from mellow to fun.

Someone asked me, "Why would I buy this instead of a C7 'Vette?" My answer was, "If you have to ask, then you aren't the customer for the i8. Go buy the Vette. You'll get more horsepower for less money."

This isn't a track car. It isn't going to be the fastest thing on the road. But it is a landmark car. It is breaking new ground for BMW. It's damn pretty. It's more comfortable than I expected and has better visibility as well.

I'm a BMW Addict.

Great to hear @Louv, glad you enjoyed driving the i8. It's been interesting reading the reviews so far, and watching Chris Harris driving the i8 and giving his take. I'll look forward to reading your article. Might need to join BMWCCA, haha; been meaning to do that anyway so an i8 article will give me the nudge that I needed.

Louv, we're all envious of you folks that have gotten to drive the i8. A couple of questions for you: any mention of when US deliveries will start (heard everything from June to September), and was there any discussion of the display key?

A very few will arrive late June/early July. The volume shipments won't start until September.

Thanks Louv

Your comment to a person regarding the i8 vs. the C7 Vette says it all, Louv. It's all about the ride. Nobody drives any car at 10/10 most, or even any of the time. If a buyer has a strong need to say he/she has the most hp, torque, speed or quickness, that's fine...for them. We all live in the real world and the i8 should make that driving a great, new and exciting event.
I've owned Ferrari's, Maserati's, Porsche's, Aston's, a Ford GT, Viper, many Vette's, MB's, two R8's, two Z8's, etc, etc. I own them to enjoy their fantastic driving experiences, as works of art and as unique individual examples of the hobby/sport.
To each his or her own.

drlonline: There was no discussion of the display key. We were given normal keys for the drive. In the press material we were given this is the only mention of the key at all:

"The manufacture of the key for the BMW i8 involves another innovative form of raw material production – its casing is made from a biopolymer based on castor beans. The oil gained from the beans is mixed with 30 per cent glass fibre to make an extremely high- quality and robust material."

Sadly this leans towards what I had been informed about the Display Key no longer being available for the i8 (either as standard equipment or as a cost option).
