BMW flagship: BMW 8 Series: This is the production version of the BMW CS Concept, a 4 door coupé, very luxurious and comfortalbe but fast with its BMW V12 engine.
BMW M flagship: BMW Z8: Even if ther is no M badge, this car is an M car, a lightweight fast coupé-convertible with only 2 seats, and probably a specially developped V10, from the M5 F10.
If Scott confirmed this I'd be happy, but alas, I think it's wishful thinking on your part,

the BMW 8 series, will at best be the 6 series Gran Coupe (I hope)

the i8 seems confirmed,

but the 'Z8' is only a rumour, at best.

To everyone that doesn't think so, come back at the end of the year after gas prices start hitting $4/Gallon and stays there. Inflation will occur in 2011, so get ready. In the next 2-3 years, people are going to be asking for more eco-friendly cars, especially in the high performance category. BMW wouldn't invest large amounts of capital if they didn't think so either.
when u pay 200k for an electric car I don't think $4/Gallon matters?

No, but similar criticisms can be levelled at a lot of cars, a brand new 330d would never pay for itself over a £500 eBay special E30...

Fuel economy simply can't figure into ownership costs when spending even half this money

for me the i8 would probably need to clock up 1,000,000 miles to pay for itself.

It's about making a car that people want to buy emotionally... to introduce a new wave of technology to the Brand (and therefore the premium car segment).. I'm sure the i8 will sell well enough.. although I really doubt BMW are expecting to make a profit on the cost of the VisionED program (may the part cost of each car though?) at this stage.

If you guys haven't read this article (http://www.businessweek.com/magazine...7080555679.htm) from Business Week 2 months ago. BMW's i division is the future of BMW. The new CEO even hired Fischer and Albright to quell and persuade internal petrol head to join in the new direction. (Fischer on one head was a left-wing radical socialist and may still be) It's a major direction change so do not be so shock when next generation of M cars appear lackluster as major investment is going towards pursuit of efficiency and social responsibility.

But with this new vehicle, Reithofer is attempting something radical, pushing BMW beyond its core strengths of speed and style, and toward solving different problems, like global warming, oil depletion, and the shift in growth from the West to the East. China is, in a sense, the ultimate destination, a land of exponentially growing megacities—and the pollution, traffic snarls, and huge spending power that come with them.

Nov. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, the world’s largest maker of luxury vehicles, said it will invest 530 million euros ($751 million) to set up production of its Megacity electric-powered city car.

The investments, including a new carbon-fiber factory in the U.S. and a 400 million-euro expansion of its Leipzig, Germany, auto plant, will create more than 1,000 jobs, the Munich-based company said today in a statement.

BMW, the world's biggest luxury-car maker, and No. 2 Daimler will need to trim CO2 output by 25 percent to avoid a penalty. Porsche, maker of the 911 sports coupe and Cayenne SUV, will require a 49 percent reduction.
It's yet to be seen whether any of these new technologies will be able to return back to the traditional high performance platform or BMW will be contend making profit from selling mass quantity of megacity to Chinese, and Indian.
