I got a couple pictures of the i3 over the weekend. It was quite cool to stumble upon on the way back with the GF.

It is a very very interesting looking car.

those tires are so cool looking.

i3, ehhhhh, much better than the DumbSmartcar for sure. the i8, looks great, but something about it is just off. nevertheless, i wouldn't whine if i had either, that's for sure.

Does anyone have any insight as to why the i8's tires are so thin?

If BMW's past history of making production vehicles very close to the concept versions is any indication, these concepts won't be very unrealistic once the production versions are revealed.

for efficient dynamics purposes mainly. there are virtually no downsides having narrow tires compared to wide ones providing that the diameter is big enough. the contact surface can be the same or greater compared with wide tires with smaller diameter thus the road holding is not in jeopardy here. the upsides are lower rolling resistance, lower aerodynamic drag and lower up-force presumably, aquaplaning is less likely to occur as well. Decreased non suspended and rotational masses are also a benefit of that solution. There are packaging benefits too.
