To answer some questions posted here. Yes these have been approved for use in Germany now and 2017 for the US. They're going to reduce aerodynamic drag and eliminate blind spots. I am an i8 owner and can tell you that I don't like this look and couldn't care less about aerodynamics. But the car has some blind spots that you have to get used to so that may be a solution. I cannot see myself getting used to looking at the interior mirror and I also agree with the poster highlighting the challenges with far vs near projection, magic leap is definitely ahead of the pack........

I love that the seats are carbon structure cloth.

Why not just put a small conventional mirror with the small camera in the glass?
Best of both worlds... I just don't like the look and its not good for going through traffic lol |

Another screen to stare at seems a small price to pay to fix all this. I'd personally pay extra to get this system.

It would be like changing all the windows in your house for lcd screens, then display the outside view on them.

If you're not too lazy to look in to blind spot mirrors...they cost about $6 and last forever without any worry of them failing. Problem solved.

I'm surprised at the reactions here. If it ain't broke don't fix it??? I work in continuous improvement and that is the antithesis of progress. Come on guys, BMW is on the forefront of technology and development, we should be praising their efforts!
There are so many concept cars that look amazing with super-slim mirrors, and then people are disappointed with reality when safety regulations make their mark. I remember when the E9x LCI was launched and everyone mocked the larger mirrors, those with older cars relishing in their one supposed win over the tweaked models. I honestly think this is a much better solution than what we see from tesla, where the camera is embedded right in the door and there is nothing at all sticking out. I like the look of the stalks. It will take getting used to a new location for this information (in the mirror), but that's no reason to dismiss it right away. Sticking a trailer mirror on the side? I hope you're not serious with that |

People set their mirrors all wrong. With side of dar in view. When set correctly, your sideview mirror will overlook the blindspot, then when it moves out, it pops up in the central mirror.

Still can't get over the tRex image. But the innovation is worthy of consideration. However aerodynamics or not, it would be more reassuring if the addition of side mirrors would be contemplated for the purpose of redundancy (in case of a related micro-chip, wiring or camera failure).

Its hideous idea.
You expect humans to adapt to something which they have been doing for year! How do you clear blind spot? In Uk, its always raining and if those tiny camera get wet or covered with dirt / snow then you are fooked! Unless bmw has developed self cleaning / steaming system. Bmw should leave standard mirrors and if needed these gimmicks can be turned on.

A better solution would be to have nothing sticking to the side of the car but to embed the cameras in the body of the car as much as possible to generate a single view pulled from different angles, just like the top and side view cameras. I do love this kind of progress and for those who do not understand the added value are stuck in the old age.
With cameras and software the sky is the limit! |

I would pay to get this system installed on my racecar. Way better than a five-panel Wink rear view and convex side view mirrors. Seeing everything that's going on around you in one glance would save me a lot of glances to both sides and the rear when all those glances take my eyes off what's important—where the racecar is going right now, and milliseconds count.
Remember that all U.S. vehicles under 10,000 pounds except motorcycles have to come with back-up cameras by 2018. The main problem with mandating back-up cameras is that so far, the cameras feed a separate screen that many drivers never look at when they are backing up. Why?—because they're looking in their mirrors. This approach would satisfy the back-up camera requirement in such a way that more drivers backing up would actually look at the picture. It would also give me a clear, unobstructed view of what's behind my i8 when I'm on a trip with the back seat—or "trunk," as I call it—full of luggage and hanging clothes. Much safer. |
