I am having a strange CarPlay issue that I can’t figure out.

My EA plug and charge was not showing up, so BMW genius suggested an IDrive restart, which successfully added my plug and charge, but then CarPlay would not connect. I tried resetting phone deleting connection and adding connection, but it wouldn’t allow me to connect CarPlay.

BMW genius suggested a telecom reset, which fixed CarPlay, but when I went back to the car 30 minutes later, no CarPlay. BMW genius had me do another reset, but I’m worried there may be a bigger issue at play.

Any suggestions?

When you say "telecom reset" do you mean holding down the volume button for 60-70 seconds until the infotainment screen resets?

Typically doing that reset a couple of times will fix any CarPlay connection issues. Sometimes just rebooting my phone will get it unstuck, and then my CarPlay will be rock solid for months afterwards.

Having issues with CarPlay is a common problem with the iX. It amazes me the BMW has not fixed it. Had an X5 loaner for a week. Worked perfectly. I find that I have to go to my phone, turn off WiFi then turn it back on.

The frustrating thing is it was flawless before rebooting to add the plug and charge

I don’t have plug and charge. But have always had issues with CarPlay

Do a headunit restart by holding down the volume knob for 70 (yes 70) seconds. You don’t ruin anything by doing this. Let the car sleep, locked for an hour. Get back in and delete all phones. Delete car from phone. Power down phone and restart and reconnect.

When I have problems connecting CarPlay I cycle Airplane Mode on and off on my phone. Usually connects for me after that. It might be a phone problem.

Try a diagnostic mode reboot which resolves issues that regular reboot doesn’t. Press start/stop three times and wait for the diagnostic mode message to appear in the instrument cluster; then hold the volume button until the iDrive screen shuts off and comes back on.

Genius told me to hold down volume button to get back the EA plug and charge. That didn’t work
How do you restart the i drive if that wasn’t it?

You could try the restart described two posts prior to yours by javapro.

It works after a restart, but inevitably drops.

Tried it just now and that didn’t work either. Oh well.
