On the BMW, to what speed can you drive hands free with DAPP?

On previous BMWs I believe you can drive hands free until about 40 mph. And I believe you can use DAPP upto 80 mph, however, between 40 and 80 mph you have keep touching the steering wheel every few seconds. In the description of DAPP for the iX it gives you the impression that you can drive completely hands free until 80 mph. Can someone confirm? Thanks.

You can go handsfree up to 80mph if your build is 3/2023 or later. iX's built before that can't do it as it requires a head unit upgrade that only available after that date.

If your vehicle is equipped with traffic jam assistant, you can go hands-free up to 40 mph. Newer vehicles offer highway assistant which you can drive hands-free up to 85 mph on supported highways.

You are looking at this the wrong way. It is not that you have to keep touching the steering wheel every few seconds, you are supposed to keep your hand(s) on the wheel and it will tolerate a few seconds of letting it go to do something like get a drink, scratch your ba..... Your back.

Plus his analysis is slightly incorrect. You do not need to touch the steering wheel at all when you have these features enabled:

Traffic Jam Assistant (pre-March 2023): hands-free up to 40 mph when engaged (on supported highways)
Highway Assistant (post-March 2023): hands-free up to 85 mph when engaged (on supported highways)

I came from a 2021 M340i with the 40mph thing to the iX with the 85mph thing. Honestly, I prefer the M340i system a lot more.

The new system is always monitoring your eyes, even if you aren't in "assist plus" mode, and even if your hands are firmly grabbing the wheel. Combine that with the new pathetic A/C touch controls, every time I need to do something with the A/C, the car starts complaining I'm not paying attention.

This is seriously irritating.

Thanks for this info. I had the Traffic Jam Assistant on my 2023 M4 and I loved it. The only thing I didn't love is when the traffic clears and you have to put hands back on wheel only to restart system 30secs later and take hands off again when traffic backs up again.

So I was really interested in this new Highway Assistant. Can someone confirm this is available on the 2025 X5M? Or is it only on the iX / fully electric lines from BMW?

You might want to check the X5 forum or research the X5 on the BMW website.

Highway assistant is available on G05 LCI as of 03/23. Not 100% sure if that also applies to the same F95 X5 M LCI

That was my biggest gripe as well. I got a small microfiber cloth that I just place over the driver attention camera most of the time. Gives an error when turning on DAPP that says function is limited since it can’t see my face, but everything still works as intended other than being able to be hands-free, which isn’t an issue since I keep my hands on the wheel anyway, and no more annoying “Distraction Detected” alerts. In the instances where I want to use the hands-free, I just remove the cloth and after 10 seconds or so it goes back to functioning normally.
