BMW Donates 20 BMW i3 Vehicles to NYC Parks in Support of TreesCount! 2015 Census
BIMMERPOST NEWS BMW Donates 20 BMW i3 Vehicles to NYC Parks in Support of TreesCount! 2015 Census Collaboration Announced During Joint Press Conference with NYC Parks Commissioner at Julio Carballo Park in the South Bronx, N.Y. New York, N.Y. – May 19, 2015… BMW of North America announced its support of NYC Parks for its TreesCount! 2015 program with a donation of 20 BMW i3 vehicles. With these BMW i3 vehicles, TreesCount! staff and volunteers can easily travel throughout the five boroughs to map more than 600,000 street trees, helping to ensure a greener future for the City of New York, its residents and visitors. BMW deepened its commitment to sustainability with the 2014 launches of the all-electric BMW i3 and BMW i8, a plug-in hybrid sports car. Every element of the vehicles, from the carbon fiber frames to the keys, is built using high quality renewable materials and sources. “BMW’s vision for a more sustainable future aligns closely with New York City Parks’ TreesCount! mission. We are proud to donate 20 BMW i3 vehicles to help the City collect data that will enable it to understand the environmental and economic benefits of the street trees and inspire a new generation of New Yorkers who care about their city,” said Manuel Sattig, Head of Brand Strategy and Communication, BMW of North America. “We are so grateful for BMW’s support as we conduct our third street tree census across New York City. The innovative BMW i3 vehicles are a perfect fit with the new technology and mapping tools we are launching during Trees Count! 2015,” said Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP, NYC Parks Commissioner. The BMW i3 vehicles will be deployed across all five boroughs starting today. |

Aside from the Tesla and i8, still think the i3 is a good looking electric. Also slick move on BMW getting more i3's in the public.

Good job BMW!
I will say however that 500 sets of rod bearings could have been replaced for that money lol.

Even inspiring in some cases. Finally something not boring and expected. Am a designer so my thoughts are very very subjective. How something looks Is all subjective anyhow. Changing surface development from what people have become comfortable with takes time. And when you throw it at them they tend to hate it. Remember when BMW changed its design language ? People hated the move, it started a revolution in automotive design and now it is common place. Finding a new fresh face that you can call your own takes a huge effort and balls and I applaud BMW for taking a risk. |

I agree with much of what you say, -c-. Although it doesn't look like the taxi in Total Recall, I always thought it had that feel.

Here's another more recent movie attempt at a fictional electric vehicle of the future. (In this case the very near future.) From the Larry David-HBO film Clear History:
While the BMW i3 is clearly a more successful design, it still has its, er, limitations.

Whether they're selling or not, it's the right move for BMW NA: makes them look good, marketing, tax purposes....
Hopefully more car manufactures follow through |

I'm not a Greenpeace fan and never will be. BMW pride makes place for shame when I see this sort of things, can't help it. BMW stood for sporty vehicles, motorsports and driving fun in the past, not anymore.
Eventually the trees are going to take revenge as well... Mind you, I like nature, trees, all that stuff, but this is way too exaggerating the way BMW does this imho. Cheers Robin |

I3 was designed for a purpose as was the i8, both share a design language but differ in what their jobs are. The two don't belong in each others sand box. Many who I work with hate the i8 equally as much as the i3 as they feel it's way over styled and busy, some believe it or not prefer the i3's styling more than the i8 as they feel the design language fits it better. It really depends on who you talk to. I was at a car wash the other day and a women in a Range Rover said "that's the coolest car I have seen in a long time" about the i3, many compliment it. I'm sure theirs many who are disgusted by it but remain silent. Some have no idea it existed and even asked me if it was an Asian make! It's a design not meant for everyone nor was it ever planed to be, their factory isn't set up to sell hundreds of thousands. The tesla had to be beautiful as a startup company their was no room for adventurousness in the design. If they went that route and it was a flop they would fail. As a designer it's a lot easier to make something beautiful as theirs a formula for it. But to make something new and completely uncharted that takes high risk and is very very hard to do as you need upper management to buy into the design and the philosophy. Right now technology only allows for so much freedom and with the safety protocols getting tougher year over year cars are getting more and more similar. Now companies know this and are fighting for a style to call their own. It's not all about design though, if you take the i3 and break it down to its most basic functions you will have reasons for every decision made for its size, proportion, shape and content. Bmw is family owned and not run by share holders so it can take a risk and break new ground where other companies struggle to do so. Celebrate that your at the forefront of new ground in automotive design and engineering. It's a fun future ahead I only hope that more companies take a look and invest in the future as BMW has. |

I wish a car company besides Tesla would make a nice looking electric vehicle. I wonder how many people would buy an electric if they weren't all so ugly.

Great Job BMW for bringing some green life into NYC. Now I see why they increased their marketing budget to 1 Billion a year, up from 800 Million. I just did a quick review of the i3
Check it out. I almost hit 90mph, lol |
