What I don't like are those rearfacing cameras instead of proper mirrors. Had one in a rental Cadillac the other day. Utter crap. #1, there's a noticeable lag on the way from the camera lens to the display. It's annoying and not exactly confidence inspiring when manouvering in tight spaces. #2, your eyes have to re-focus. Interestingly, eyes that look into a mirror, focus in the distance. So there's no adjustment when glancing from tne road ahead into the mirror. Eyes that look at a display in the same spot, focus on the surface of the display. If that is in the position of the traditional inside mirror (which it was in this case) that can be much closer even than the instrument cluster. I really got annoyed with the system and turned it off. |

You honestly dont believe bmw can make a car to compete with and potentially outperform/outsell the tesla? You're in a dream world...VW, BMW and other giants are coming for Elon soon. I hope the T brand survives- but we shall see.

Aye-eight: totally agree. So cool we are finally seeing a glimpse of bmw's next steps into the electric car world.
I am not a fan of the camera mirrors either ...hoping tech will get better though. I'm also interested in how bmw will deal with weight distribution on these new cars. |

Of course, that assumes that BMW goes down a path of styling that is more akin to their current ICE cars, and not the i3 (I'm not a fan of the design). A full electric with the design language of the i8 would be excellent, however. But maybe best would be a 6 series Gran Coupe... with a 100kWh battery pack, and 400-ish HP. (wipes drool from corner of mouth) In 2014, as a member of the press, I sat with the BMW Product Manager of Electric Cars (then, only the i3 and i8 had been announced) and we discussed Tesla. He dismissed Tesla as "going down the wrong path", and said that "Hybrids were the right way to go". Every time I recall that conversation I laugh. The world has now woken up and is chasing Tesla's full electric vehicles. But Tesla isn't staying ahead merely because they make an electric with reasonable range. They are also kicking ass due to their foresight that a Fast Charging network is necessary, and that Fully Autonomous cars are the future. They have a head start in both those areas. Yes, BMW has announced that they will have Level 4 Autonomous vehicles in August of 2021. Will they make that date? It is still unclear, to me anyway. BMW hasn't even hired their full engineering team to do that development yet. (source: a different, on-the-record conversation I had at the BMW Tech Center in Mountain View, California)

Louv: this is some pretty interesting info and they (as did others) underestimated Elon.
Once they do catch up however, it will be quite an interesting battle right? BMW fit and finish with possibly better weight distribution. Teslas handle like camrys vs an i8 imho- but that of course is apples to oranges. |

A demo and a shipping product to Customers are two vastly different things. I've shipped enough software and hardware products to know how hard Level 4 autonomous cars will be to ship. And how much harder Level 5 will be. Shipping too soon can mean that people die... so they'll want to get it right, not fast.

Nevertheless the on-stage demo illustrated that they are on a path to productizing this capability and from my perspective was a welcomed preview of what we can expect to experience in the future. |

Yes, BMW is a "Mature car manufacturer". That is both a benefit and a curse. If BMW had a competitor to the Model 3 available now (or in six months) that had the design of, say, the 2 series, the 4 series Gran Coupe, the 6GC, or the new Z4, I'd drop my Tesla reservation like a hot rock.
