Automakers have thrown their considerable weights behind green technology. This comes as no surprise given the seemingly ever climbing gas prices and stringent future CAFE standards. Electric driven vehicles, such as plug-in hybrids are gaining popularity amid these concerns. But does green technology spell the end of performance sports cars? Not if manufacturers such as BMW, Porsche, and even an upstart such Fisker Automotive have a say.

The two German powerhouses and American newcomer are each set to produce their own eco-friendly yet exotic, sleek, low slung plug-in hybrid sports cars. Porsche's offering is the Porsche 918 Spyder, a hybrid super car starting at $845,000. The Fisker Karma comes in at the other end of the price spectrum and starts at $95900. The just introduced BMW i8 slots somewhere in between - with respect to price and performance.

Despite their vast price differences, each car is a plug-in hybrid powered by both electric and gasoline powered motors (though the Fisker's gasoline engine only recharges the electric motors), with sports car performance and looks. We dig deeper into the cars' technical and design similarities and differences below:

Interesting comparison and the Porsche looks amazing, however its not much of a hybrid with a big V8 in it.

I'll take the porsche thanks. V8 hybrid. nice

The i8 does look good though. Very futuristic.

Not keen on that Fisker Karma thing. Apart from having a name that sounds like a sex toy it's so fugly they have to put a sunbathing blonde on the roof to distract you from looking at it.

I've seen the Karma in Irvine and it looks pretty big. Porsche FTW.

I seem to be in a minority here, on looks alone the i8 takes it for me - it makes the other two look bloated and anachronistic. The i8 looks sleek, compact and agile - everything I want in a sportscar. Stunning. Also, the 918's side exhausts look like a design compromise or a misguided dragster cue. It's the i8 hands down for me.

So basically they get better along with their prices. I'm impressed the Porsche can get that mileage with that V8

They all look great, but that porsche might be the prettiest thing I've ever seen.

i8 Only takes 1:45hr for 100% charge!!!

This is amazing, people look for cars that will take a minimum charge time.

Compare that to the Porsche.

If I get the Porsche, I save about 3 gallons/day, comes up to about $5,000/year. So if I keep it for 165years the saving would PRACTICALLY pay for the car. Huh, cool, I'll take one.
