i3 won't charge - EV communications error

Has anyone come across this when using the supplied 120v EVSE? Have not tried a different charge yet. Power light is on and the bottom two flash red, which I believe translates to EV communications error. We have a good amount of snow here and it's impossible to keep the charge port fully dry sometimes between opening the cover and connecting the plug, but that's never caused an issue before. I have dried both the port and plug but the error is still present. Is there a reset or fuse to pull on the car to try before taking it in to service? Thanks!

service advisor just called me back and is looking into it now with the i3 technician, after giving him some more details on the issue. Even if you guys haven't come across the issue, I will update this thread in case someone does in the future.

All AC chargers include a Residual Current Detector. It has the same function as the GFCI plugs in your kitchen. If you get any leakage from the AC side of the charger plug to ground it will disable the charger. Maybe your not so dry charger port is causing the problem?

I just checked and the i3 charges fine at a public charging station. The dealer will order a replacement evse and hopefully has one I can borrow in the meantime. We shall see how that turns out.

I'd have them grab one from one of their demo cars.

Good you were able to trouble shoot it without much issue.

Thanks. I ended up being able to borrow one of their shop units until mine came in this past Friday. They advised to store it in the trunk instead of the 'frunk' in this weather (lots of snow/ some rain, and temps between -10 and 25 plus wind chill) 'just in case' despite it being weather proof.

It did push me to finally spend a few bucks and order the DYI JuiceBox kit and will have a 40amp circuit added to the office suite at work. Hopefully the 'Occasional use charger' as BMW calls it won't be my primary means of charging anymore very soon.

When used for business, the cost of the EVSE AND installation is tax deductible (as I understand it, they extended that, it was to have expired last year - double-check that as well). In a business, keep in mind the DIY Juice box has not attained a UL rating, their production version has. Double-check that, as things could have changed. THat factor, in a business especially, could be problematic to a building inspector.

At the Federal level you can get a credit for 30% of the cost of the EVSE and installation costs up to $1000 for individuals or $30000 for business

That sounds very interesting, but I'm not able to find any confirmation of a program for 2015. Have you guys come across any 2015 info?

Did a new charger fix this issue?

Yes, it did. They advised to keep the new one in the trunk instead of frunk 'just in case' if it's really wet out as the frunk is not sealed. I can confirm that after driving to work in light snow this morning, the frunk was lined with a thin coat as well. The EVSE should be NEMA 4 rated though so I honestly don't think that getting it wet makes any difference, just a bad unit.
