Display Key Success!!!
I would like to thank the Bimmerpost community. I have a 2015 charcoal grey I8 in Atlanta. My BMW service department would not order the display key for me for a year. I read your posts finally and after multiple calls and visits just told them to order me the key I didn't care what they thought. I would use it as a paperweight. I figured the factory wouldn't ship it if it didn't work. It is tied to your Vin # etc. I just received it and all working except pre-conditioning but I can't do that with my normal key anyway. Thx again!

Hm, interesting...do you have the iOS app setup? If so, can you do precon from there?

COOL
Which part # did you use? I saw the post, but then OEM parts suggested a new part... how much did you pay?

2 different dealerships in the DFW area both quoted me the same amount which I believe was around $647 for the part
Everyone has also said it's not really worth it, though, since it doesn't allow pre-conditioning or the move forward/backward function that the 7-series has. It really just shows you status indicators that the Connected app already shows |

This may be an old question, but how does the key communicate with the car when you’re not next to it? Preconditioning only makes sense if you’re away from the car. And that works fine with the app.

With the app, a command is sent over the network to BMW's servers and then on to the car. You then have to wait for the car to send an acknowledgement back over the network via the server and then back to the app. If the car doesn't have network coverage it may not work. In any event this typically takes around 40-60 seconds. With the display key it's just instant. |

Yeah $647 was the cost. Also service doesn't seem to be working. Normal spare is the same cost I believe so just a cooler looking spare really with readout if battery and distance and also if it is locked or if you have your windows down.

And like Zagaboo said, I always use it from my house. Or from a shop or office, when the car is outside, a few minutes before I leave. |

I'm currently in my Study inside my house. The i8 is in my garage, which is more distance, plus there are house and garage walls in the way. And it connects every time. In fact when I tested it, the DisplayKey connects to the i8 from anywhere in my house. I cannot connect with the iPhone app (or PC) to the i8 when it is in my garage, as 3G signals cannot get through the garage. |
