Gintani ECU tune + race fuel 1/4 & 1/8 mile results

Here are quarter mile times and 1/8 mile times using a Gintani ECU flash tune. Gintani says that their tune adds 60hp and 100 lbs feet of torque. The 1/8 mile times are using Torco race fuel additive that supposedly raises 93 octane gas to 108 octane. Prior to the ECU tune, I had run 1/8 mile several times and the best time I could achieve was 8.2 seconds. After the ECU tune and without additive, it hits a consistent 7.9-8.0 and with the race fuel additive, as you can see, I’m consistently hitting 7.8. The quarter mile times are also very consistent across the board (did not test with additive) at 12.3 which is slightly quicker than the rated 12.6 from Motor Trend. I was racing my friend in their Camaro SS with bolt-ons every pass in the 1/4 mile races (I was car #339) and random 5.0 mustangs in the 1/8 mile races. All races used launch control, of course. Also interesting to note how much the race fuel additive helps the 60' time. The i8 is an extremely consistent car if you launch properly as you can see in the trap speeds - all of them are close to identical or identical in their respective races. Anyways, just thought these numbers and data might help people considering getting a tune in their i8.

I'll ask the obvious question. How much did you pay for the gintani ecu tune?

The only differences I've noticed are the shift from first to second gear when using launch control really has a much more noticeable kick to it and the 60' time is noticeably quicker. Nothing else changes much, except for the fact that I was able to *easily* surpass the 155mph limiter after the tune. I think I hit about 168mph once before I voluntarily started slowing down

Higher top speed would be the only reason for me to consider a tune. Couldn’t care less about a tenth of a second less 0-60. But going past the limiter may be interesting. Used to floor my previous car all the time. Porsche doesn’t do limiters, of course. Just wondering what that might do to the e-motor rpms, as the front gearing seems to be carefully tuned.

Adding 100 pounds of torque to this car should increase its 0-60 significantly. If there is no significant increase, then I’d be sceptical about the tune itself.

I've never run a vbox to test 0-60, but I also know that the torque/hp numbers are divided between the gas and electric, it's not all on the gas motor. Everyone that tunes i8's also says that it's near impossible to dyno due to it being AWD (and not a true AWD) and because of the divided gas/electric power/torque

Thanks for posting this. Not to sound facetious or like a troll, but this thread helped convince me to never tune the i8. There's only so much more you're going to be able to squeeze out of the 3 cylinder motor and I'd rather not mess with tweaking the battery. If the tune made you happy, that's what matters though. It's definitely consistent, I'll say that much.
