True
I had some badass Cars, but the i8 is a class on its own. It's plenty fast and I don't think it will get a powerbump soon. It just doesn't need it.

0-60 in 4 seconds, mid-range acceleration of 50-75 in 2.6, top speed of 160...all with the ability to average over 45+ mpg (personal results) on the highway.

I will never understand the comments about its lack of performance. I guess the bar is just too high these days.

It is certainly plenty quick enough on the road, and at a level where it is possible to fully exploit its performance

Not at all. Nor am I saying the i8 is a "truly fast car". In fact I stated it is not even suited to be a track car in a separate thread.

My comment is that M cars are not that quick either, and most M fanatics have never driven a truly fast car, yet they talk the talk as if the M cars were truly special and the i8 a terrible car.

Shouldn't surprise you that this kind of thing will get a response in this section of the forum.
Curious what "truly fast" would mean outside the supercar realm. The i8 market segment is plenty crowded (2 doors sports car, $125-150k) and aside from MPG, is out shined by its rivals. The respective M cars have been at or near the top of their segments for ages.

Salty, still not over the fact that everyone stops caring about an M car when the i8 parks next to it. Visiting a gas station with the M6 was a regular event. With the i8, 4 years after introduction and its still like Batman made an appearance. They just crave the attention you're getting now. What's sad is when I say "they" it's most often than not just grown children who grew up with M car fantasies but drive supped up 3 series that are a generation or two too old or the stereotypical douche-type M car drivers who thinks himself a rare-breed and is in denial that he drives just another BMW (those had a lot to do with me getting rid of my last M6).

I can confirm this. I drove back to Pittsburgh from DC today. I stopped at midway rest stop to refuel. It took about 20 minutes to leave because the car was mobbed with people wanting to take pics. A person literally followed me for miles and got off at midway just because they wanted to check the car out. Annoying and sort of scary but I can handle myself so not worried about that. Everyone is always incredibly friendly about the car though. It gets super positive attention and lots of it. My Ferrari does not always get the most positive attention and gets less overall.

Exactly the same here in Switzerland.

What's crazy is I live in the same area that's home to one of only a few Venenos in the world, not to mention a handful of Pagani Huayras, Koenigseggs etc. Basically every exotic that's released is seen driving around this area the same day it hits the market if not sooner. In other words I'm in what some would refer to as an exotic car pocket, and somehow the i8 still manages to be a show stopper despite all these rarities constantly roaming around. I can't say as much for many other higher performing cars in and well above the $140k+ segment. Certainly can't say anything of the sort for any other BMW.

No one gives a sh!t about the i8 where I live. Which is the way I like it.

As for whether it is "fast enough," unless you are going to track your car it is definitely fast enough if you want to stay out of jail and avoid killing yourself or somebody else.

I am finding it really hard to wait and see if the 2018 is irresistible and perfect for a springtime euro delivery. I want a prime used one right now!!!

Sounds like you're in the same boat as me. My 550i lease expires end of April, though it could be extended if I can confirm an order for another BMW, and I too want to take the 2018 i8 via ED. I'm hoping we might hear more details on the refreshed car at the Frankfurt auto show in a couple weeks, but latest info seems to suggest it won't be until the November L.A. auto show, when the roadster is unveiled.

The wait to find out whether or not the updated i8 is worth holding off on a used one is killing me.

A bit disconcerting that the coupe is being phased out.

That is not what I was saying, sorry if I was unclear.

I am only saying that production is (perfectly logically) switching to the roadster. Coupes will still be made, when ordered by a customer.

After the demand for roadsters is filled I would logically think production will then become mixed.

Well then I guess we are still a bit in the dark as to what changes will occur to the 2018 coupe; evidently the focus is on the roadster, and some of the major changes there will not be possible for the coupe.

Which major changes from the roadster would not be possible for the coupe? The ones I most care about are possible increase in power from the ICE (sounds like electric motor increase is not possible), greater range for e-drive mode, updated iDrive to latest iteration, and possible addition of sensor driven features (e.g. blind spot warning, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control).

I was under the impression that the boost was coming from the eDrive.

I may be the only one thinking this. But BMW produces these teaser videos to entice excitement. Don't get me wrong. It works. I am excited! BUT. They are also setting expectations. The longer your mind has time to wander and be imaginative, the more likely you are to be disappointed with the end product. Maybe it's my lack of caffeine talking.

Anxiously waiting to see what it looks like.
