To further clarify I am definitely NOT pointing out you can go faster for cheaper. The point is the i8 is confused like the amphibious cars pf the past. Not great boats, and not a great cars. Doesn't do anything well but to some it looks great! (Choice). Hybrids will be an obsolete platform very soon. the i3 and i8 power-terrain really just doesn't make much sense in the market. It was an odd decision by bmw, and now every brand is doing hybrids. Why? Just go all battery and get some great benefits like carpool lanes. So lets talk about hybrid exotics... well... they are all insane fast. The i8 just isnt. You buy an i8 for the look and "choice" as mentioned above. I get it. People like what they like, doesnt have to be fast, or make any sense at all aka barrett jackson, HA!. If bmw released this car all battery with a decent range it would be a ground breaking innovation leader, and well deserved for all the press. Remember clarksons comment about the R8? Followed longboarder for a while now and watched your sc M3 at the airstrip, the 997tt is equally impressive. Modded 997tt is a car I've followed since new (innovative class leader and incredible performance)

I don't get your rant here. If you dislike the i8 so much, why exactly are you reading and posting in the i8 forum? Gutting 335i's and making them faster than M3's is a hobby some people enjoy- others enjoy cool new Halo-cars from brands like BMW. Enough of this BS. Expanding on your previous post doesn't give it any more sense, in my eyes. The i8 doesn't do anything well? How much time have you spent in one? I've owned mine for over two years, and so far have not encountered a car that was and actually wanted to be faster. I don't get people who think everyday driving is a road race, every day, every traffic light, every on-ramp. The i8 is plenty fast. You don't have to carry a 6L V10 around just in case you come across a 911 Turbo who also wants to race. Just like you don't have to carry around a gun on the off chance that you get mugged (and it may still be a bad idea then). But I realize not everybody gets that. Secondly, none of the other $150k cars will give you 60+ mpg average. Thridly, those "insanely fast" hybrid exotics are between five and seven times more expensive than the i8. Different league altogether. Would I like to have a 918 Spyder? Sure. Do I think it's worth $700k? Nope. Fourthly, all-electric will come, no doubt. But it will be mainstream stuff only once they've fixed the energy density and charging time issues. Until then, hybrid is the smartest way to go, imho. But of course, in your view, "every brand doing hybrids" as you say, must be wrong and you're right. |

To offer you a broader perspective on individual choices, I selected the i8 over the R8 5.2, AMG GT, and Aston Martin Vanquish. For me, the i8 provides an amalgamation of the aforementioned choices, while offering a departure from the traditional ICE. The i8, with its low center of gravity exotic sports car stance and GT ride, delivers an absurdly high mpg, all the while zipping me 0-60 in 3.9-4.0 seconds (private track radar test runs). While I hear you, to analogies the i8 with the amphibious car concept is more than a bit of a stretch and as Longboarder mentioned, comes across as trolling i8 owners. |

Aye-eight made comment about mpg. I just don't see the ROI there given these probably aren't driven 18k miles yr, and the roads, highways are full of body damage obstacles. It was tough to spend even $150/mo in gas when I tried to justify an all electric total cost of ownership; I ended up just doing it anyway. Ill agree To the above point its about choice. Good podcast like car convo!

And a flood of 2017s with new colors hitting the market. I like the protonic dark silver as much as Sophisto; waffling between ED 2018, used 2015, discounted new 2017.

the deals will have to be really good on leftover 2017s to sell in competition with the revamped 2018s...

I'm thinking the same. There are a ton of protonic reds right now (pretty much all of them) and the frozen black i8s just hit the west coast-

My fav is the new protonic dark silver w dark grey interior.
I know it is petty and self-deceptive, but I prefer the less showy colors, thinking that I won't be labeled as an attention-seeker. Ha.

These days I like cars that most people don't. To me the i8 (like my 4C and the Evora 400 I am buying) is unique and you have to get the car to truly appreciate it. There are those who get it and those who do not, nothing wrong with that. For those like me who do, enjoy.

I feel like those numbers are inflated. But who knows- maybe LA isn't an i8 market after all?

But, it's always felt like most buyers just keep them garaged. Maybe drive occasionally.
