mucho thanko. Super excited for this ....except where are they getting this double the range business? BMW themselves said 114 on the BEV - not 195 (which sounds like a Rex figure)

BEV = Basic Electric Vehicle
Rex = Range Extender BEV has no gas motor and is 100% electric. Rex has the optional motor that extends range and uses petrol. The motor serves as a generator to charge the battery. And 114 is the EPA combined city/highway mileage in full comfort with AC running. I expect some drivers to easily breach 150+ miles. With 27.2kW usable and current i3 drivers being able to achieve 6kW/mile - the math comes out to ~163 miles. |

In the UK, BMW UK gets away with advertising that the same car gets 125 miles, based on looser British testing standards. Same car, same batteries, different advertised ranges. The reason +50% battery capacity expansion gets you only +40.7% range gain is that the new batteries are heavier. That also propagates to longer 0-60mph times for the new ar. Old REX had total range of 150 miles (in the US), roughly 75 miles each from battery and the engine. If you extrapolate similar battery range increase of 40.7%, you are up to 105 miles on REX battery + 75 on engine = ~180 miles in total. Brits get away with claiming 195 mile range for the reasons stated above. a

Range varies a LOT with driving style/speed, and ambient temps. A LOT. I posted a longer write-up on the subject in another thread, but my REX can go as long as 100 miles in EV and another 105 miles in REX mode (~205 miles total) if you are driving on back-roads, under 55mph, with ambient temps in 60-80F range. The opposite would be dead of the winter, 0F driving on a highway at 75+mph (local highway cruise speed). I was lucky to get 45 miles in EV mode and something similar on REX. Maybe would have been 90 total, but I never dared to push in anywhere close to the limit. In other words, average mileage is significantly more useless in EV ratings than in ICE cars. However, as long as you use consistent measurement standards, it will allow you to compare one car to another. a
