R8 owner going i8

So I think I am trading my r8 spyder for an i8. Going white with frozen grey. Hopefully I won't regret it as the R8 is a great car. Drove it twice and think it drives great. Have had 2 other BMW's that I liked. Took a 3 year lease so not a long term commitment.

Just hope it is not the novelty of the car that hooked me. The looks have grown on me, though my son still thinks the r8 looks better.

Underneath the bonkers styling it's just a really good car. Don't worry, you've made a really good choice.

We missed you yesterday at the BMW Event. Awesome they emailed you the incentive despite you not attending. I'm sure "363ny" may have preferred that instead of driving 6hrs r/t in the rain!

I'm still torn about the car. I'm going to wait it out until Nov/Dec Holiday incentives arrive and see how much more aggressive the deals become.

R8 and BMW i8 are two best looking cars for me save present Lamborghini models. I don't think you would feel like kicking yourself for picking up the i8. It's my daily car and very versatile too giving its proportions and dimensions

I would love an R8 , but cannot justify a V10 Engine giving 20mpg for my daily drive. The i8 looks as good, almost as quick, but costs bugger all to run. Best of all worlds for me. I think you will miss the torque and sound and overall thrill of the R8, but you wont be too disappointed. Enjoy and give us your thoughts .......

The R8 v10 will firstly not give you anywhere near 20mph for the daily drive. And the acceleration of the i8 is not even close to the v10. The op probably has the r8 v8 which is much more similar to the i8 from an acceleration standpoint. And no, r8 owners (whether v8 or v10) will not "miss the torque" compared to the i8. The i8 has a ton of torque, but no top end power.

Ok sorry, I should have said sub 20mpg in the R8. I don't think my i8 has a `ton of torque`, TBH. ? Its ok , but nothing like my C63 AMG . My RS4 felt quicker too.
I love the i8 for the fact you can rag around everywhere in it and still return 35-40mpg....Now that is cheap fun !

I think "no top end power" is a little drastic. I just went 200 miles to Munich and back. Pull from 200 km/h to the limit is not bad at all, albeit maybe not as strong as from standstill. Nobody kept up with me.

... Oh, and I still averaged 28 mpg, despite constantly going from full throttle to brakes and back again thanks to fairly busy traffic. Still managed to go flat-out about half a dozen times.

I had fun. I'm not a golfer, so I just went for the test drives!

Drove the i8, X5M, M2, M6GC, and M3zcp. Weather sucked, and I almost bit the dust with the M2 due to hydroplaning (scared the sh!t out of me), but it was a good time overall.

I convinced 363ny to stay for the lunch, which was also decent. It sounds like he'll be joining the ranks!

As I mentioned before, I'm not sure I could let go of my F-Type with it glorious dinosaur depleting fuel starved V8 and extreme noise! I also find it more beautiful than the i8....however, if the deals are too good to pass up come Nov/Dec, I too may join the fun

Garmin Connect. Data pulled from my Garmin pilot watch. That's why it says "ground speed".

I love those events. I agree love the jag f type coupe looks. One of the best designs. The I8 look is growing on me. I still think it's a bit busy with two tone paint etc. So what are your thoughts on the I8 after your test drive.

I also like the fact that it's pretty exclusive. I think I have seen one on the road. For the lease deals on these u can't beat it.

Mine is 143495 sticker. I found a mega with the right color scheme, so no need to get giga or terra. I like the leather with the cloth inserts. The only thing mine won't have is the twist wheels which I prefer. I'll just deal with it.

Well sure maybe I'm desensitized to speed given my other cars but I also have a basis for saying this, which is my independent vBox tests which indicated a 12.9 second 60-130mph and the 112mph 1/4 mile trap speed. IMHO That is "no top end".

I think top end speed is much less important in the States. No one can go over 100 for long unless you live in Idaho or Montana or something to that effect. 0-100 mph is really all the matters. I8 is around 9 seconds. Fine by me.

A 911 Turbo S will outrun an i8, no doubt. But the X5 and the Wrangler will hardly spoil your sense for speed.

Like I tried to say in the other thread: I can't comment on your test results. So much depends on conditions and setup. One or two people in the car? Full or near-empty fuel tank? Road absolutely flat or slightly uphill? Straight or with turns? Headwind? Grippiness of road? Fuel grade used? Launch Control or not (I believe you said no)? That's why drag races are run side-by-side and not by comparing numbers that someone measured somewhere.

What I can tell you that with a total of a few hundred cars near me along the same stretch of road, the i8 outraced all of them by a clear margin. And there were enough that tried. That's good enough for me.

Well I have the 60-130 mph tune-only 991 Turbo record at 6.6 seconds on the exact stretch of road I did the i8 test. My 997.2 Turbo has held that's platform's overall world record for years (although my buddy in the uk with an ES 650 package came close at TV recently). My M3 (which I sold for the i8) did a 6.9 on again that same stretch of road. So I know how to conduct these tests to achieve optimal results. The bottom line is this car has only 362 hp. Mine, well not for much longer.

I can't comment on street racing I've never done that. I do airstrip racing in fact we have two of them later this month.

Weather notwithstanding, event was very good. I too am not a golfer but that worked in the favor of anyone who came primarily for the drives as it was easy to drive the cars of your choice without any waiting since most were golfing.

Car selection was very nice: i8 i3, Alpina B6, M2, M3, M4 and M6. Probably about ten cars in total. Favorite drives were the M2, i8 and Alpina B6. Was in the Alpina when found myself behind an Amish Buggy. 600 horses to his 1 horse

I would imagine it would be tough to have a clean drives license after spending 3 years with the B6. Stunning car though.

Got to meet Kief who is a great guy and we went for a drive in the M2 and M3 and enjoyed lunch.

Kief - did you win the M4GTS?

It's not street racing - just driving. Wife in the car and every bit of space stuffed with luggage for a week at Oktoberfest. Items in the trunk came out nice and toasty.
