Coolant warning popped up again today. Was just a couple of miles away from an I service centre so gave them a call and they had the car in for a look. They advised a few cars were suffering from sensor faults and, after checking levels, they confirmed mine was too so have ordered a part and I'm booked in in a couple of weeks for a swap. Getting an i8 as a loaner too ?

Had the same issue, coolant level low.

North Oxford Garage said they had three with same issue within the past two weeks, and suspected senor and had replaced header tank ? On others...

Mine to turned out to be different as others came on while driving, particularly on bends ? Mine was on each time i started the car.

Turned out it had a fault in the rear radiator and this was replaced.

Same problem here, had the coolant expansion tank replaced. Also sorted a condensed light cluster at the same time.

I was one of the North Oxford cars - expansion tank fixed it for me but I expect it was just a faulty cap. Came on for me after driving for a while.

Notice this is a common issue. I got the warning on my car today. Noticed fluid under the car in garage. Now thinking, is that fluid coolant or from me running A/C?

New to this forum and need some assistance. What was the cost of the coolant expansion tank replacement? If you don’t mind me asking, how much did your 30,000 mile scheduled service cost? I have being trying to call several USA BMW dealerships but no one would tell me the cost for the 30,000 (inspection 1) and 60,000 (inspection 2) services. Want to know these prices before I purchase an i8. Will be purchasing 2015 i8 but researching common problems and cost of services and repairs since factory warranty will be expired. Please assist.

First service on my car at 22k was £395 which is extremely reasonable given the type of car, mileage between services and it being a main dealer service in an 18 month old car!

The header tank was a warranty fix on mine.

My advice if considering an older car with expired warranty is to buy BMWs extended one at £800-£1200 per year depending on excess.

When added to cost of servicing it's still quite a cheap car to run for one of it's original cost.

100% agree - get from BMW and keep the warranty going!
Servicing is cheap as the engine is a Mini unit so cheap to service such as low oil volume, 3 spark plugs etc... The electrical side needs very little maintenance, more just an inspection, even the brakes shouldn't see much use as they tend to be on re-gen most of the time.
But, because it's boosted massively and has a large number of bespoke electronics in place to run the hybrid drive-train, a warranty is an absolute must.

Reviving an old thread as low coolant issue popped up a couple weeks after a service visit on my 2019 i8. Problem diagnosed as coolant expansion tank leak. It is taking them days to get it fixed, not sure what issue is, I know bleeding system is not easy, but you would think that they would have it sorted out by now (2022).

It seems like all these issues are affecting pre LCI models so far?

No, mine is a 2019.

After replacing various parts of the coolant system, they checked electrolysis and Bam, BMW says we need a new engine!

Any hypotheses for why a super well maintained i8 w low miles would develop this issue? 10 days after service where plugs and oil change were done, and everything else checked? My initial thought was they added a bit of coolant without bleeding system, but I never got a 'low coolant' warning, just an instant 'overheating' warning while driving on highway.

OMG that's awful. No problems with your AC compressor, I assume. If I'm not mistaken, the coolant lines run throughout the entire vehicle covering the electric motor, batteries, and gas engine. Lots of places where it could get blocked up or coolant doesn't reach the gas engine. I imagine it's hot where you're at but I still can't believe it happened so early. Could just be a cluster of events that lead to engine overheating? Hard to say. Curious what service department has to say about it.
