We were in attendance today at the NYC world premiere event for the BMW i3 sedan [Official Thread]. The i3 was simultaneously debuted in three cities - NYC, London and Beijing, and the cover was pulled back on the i3 at the same exact moment over live feeds at each location.

The debut event was held in a building bordering the High Line Park in NYC, a 1-mile linear park built on a 1.45-mile section of a former New York elevated subway track. It was quite the appropriate venue as both the i3 and the High Line Park represents sustainability mentality and creating something with an eye towards recycling (since the the railway was recycled into an urban park).

Two i3 models were on display for the reveal - one in Andesite Silver and the other in Solar Orange.

The i3 marks the very first electric vehicle by BMW and launches the BMW i brand, with the BMW i8 hybrid electric car to come next (in 2014). There will be other BMW i models coming.

Enjoy our photos.

The individual elements of the interior are beautiful, but they don't come together cohesively. The interior is definitely a mixed bag.

As a first in North America.
The BMW i3 will be the first modern BMW to use upholstery as well as leather.

I like most of the interior, but it's disappointing that they didn't go with two full displays. The one behind the wheel is tiny, and you can see that the turn indicators and other idiot light are bulb or LED-based. The central display has a gigantic bezel, which makes no sense on something that isn't meant to be held or touched. I realize this was probably a cost cutting move, but it really cheapens the otherwise nice interior.

The exterior is not beautiful, but it is interesting. I hope that the "BMW i Blue" trim bits become an option, as they only make me think of teenagers with neon on their cars. At least they've avoided painting the launch cars with the nasty green and blue hues often used for hybrids.

Very colourful! Maybe a bit too colourful for my taste, but the black carbon fibre elements actually do make it cooler looking than I imagined. As a commuter to work, I wouldn't mind getting this over a Tesla Model S for this kind of price, but only if I keep my M3 for all other occasions.

I understand the concept and the progression of modern automotive technology. I don't understand the poor execution in most areas of the design. This is something I would expect from Honda or Nissan. Is this truly the direction that BMW owners are heading? Most likely not. Back to the drawing board.

And would it have killed em to get Phil from Detailers Domain to come hook that orange unit up with some paint correction? The swirls are awful! I won't even mention the spots on the glass.

Gorgeous, so excited about this car.

Interesting split sunroof.

Also, anyone know what the "circle around the car" button is for under the hazards? It looks like shields up.

The orange version is so much better looking IMO. And the interior is definitely interesting, the thing I thought was the "coolest" def had to be those tail lights. Just cool how they look to pop up in the trunk glass. Just my .02

Looks very cool. I'd definitely consider this as a commuter car.

I do, however, feel bad for the nads of the dude who has to ride bitch on this rear seat.

Top slot coverage of a brand new model and segment from BMW, and it only has 17 responses in 10 hours. Guess we know who is and isn't the target demo of this car

Is there a reason why this thing has skinny 19" wheels? Would smaller wheels like 14-15" be more efficient ?
