My i3s 120Ah - now on 20" winter tyres
Hi folks. I'm new i3s owner in sweden this the second week and so far i love the ride
I really didn't like the standard wintertyre options so i did an own solution. I'll share my setup and findings here I'm running on Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 195/55/20 front and rear with the standard i3s staggered rims. The tyreshop put 5mm spacer in front to have some extra clearance to the strut. Spacer rear is optional and i did 15mm just for show I know the tyre is 3% bigger and will probably have a negative impact on range but hey its winter and snow/ice has a lot of negative impact on range to. I'm living far up north and are by law forced to do wintertyre until mid april so I will have some time to test this setup out. |

Nice! I have same color i3S, but put on the 428s with the blizzaks (15F/18R).
Coincidentally, I was perusing the R3s last night for the future. Looks great. Quote:
I've seen recommendations of 12/15 on the staggered i3S. |

Wait, you found winter tires for the i3's 20' wheels? I can't see them on Nokian's site; the R3 195/55/20 you speak of are nowhere to be seen online?
More details please :-) |

Looks good! I'm usually not a fan of dark blue on cars but I think it really works on the i3.
That weather, on the other hand....ouch. We rarely see the white stuff any more here in the southern US, and that's a good thing! The minute a flake hits the ground, everyone gets in their giant trucks and SUVs and drive like idiots. Oh and all the grocery stores immediately sell out of break and milk, I guess so everyone can make their milk sandwiches when they get snowed in?

Wow, cool. Seems like I have to order some new 20"s for my car. I really hate the OEM 19" setup, but love the 20" i3S setup. Hopefully, Nokian will release tyres with correct dimensions too.

I must say that it's an excellent wintercar. The tractioncontroll system is way better that my other bmw's.
The range calculation seems to be accurate with the temp. The best is preheating from the connected-app or remotekey. Works with or without the chargingcable plugged in. 15min and the car is warm and cosy The only thing that i'm missing is the stearingwheel heater. I was a little worried of the brakeregen icy conditions but the tcs handle that with no supprises so far. The 2017lci update included "50-times faster responses for greater traction and driving stability in adverse road conditions and while brake energy recuperation." Haven't tried any deep snow conditions yet |

Hi, I have a few question.
A few weeks later, would you say that your setup is worth it, did you have the chance to test it in deeper snow? How many km of range do you usually get and is it highway or city? And, did you ever had problem with DTC or DSC errors because of the higher profile tires? Thanks |

I do approx 70km a day on snow, ice, mudd tarmac and must say that the tiresetup works great. The winter over here is crazy warm but we have had 2 deepsnow weekends so far and without any driving issues. No problems with dtc dsc. Its only 3% off so it should be safe, i think :-) |

Hi OP, I have the exact same car (in same colour too!) and like this tyre setup. I have a question though, the 195 winter tyres are 20mm wider than stock 175 at the front, did they fit the narrower rims ok or did you buy new rims? If they went on the stock front rims did I read correctly that a 5mm spacer is enough to stop the wider tyres rubbing on the arches or suspension?

On the basis of this excellent thread I had some 195/55 R20 Good Year Winters fitted on both axles today.
I put the 5mm spacer on the front axle and their is clearance... so that is good. However, the traction control light seems to be flashing a lot and the power is being interrupted - I stopped the vehicle and disabled that Traction Control and of course things were fine. Then I turned the Traction Control back on and it kind of seemed alright... although I have not taken it on a long drive to check Any ideas as to why? |

Its really interesting that you are using these largers tyres on the I3s. I have 2018 I3s and the summer tyres are much cheaper also if you go for 195 55 20 all round. Is there no fouling even when hitting bumps etc? Any drawbacks that you have noticed?

i3s tyre size
Hey - you still driving the i3S?
Just bought one, took a long journey to bring it from US and now figuring out the wheel set-up. I was thinking of the same - putting 195/55/20 on the front and rear rims but wondering how it works in the long run. Are you still using this set-up? My other option is using Chinese tires, all year type which you can actually buy in original size. |
