Munich, Germany...

BMW AG: made history today, by delivering the first eight i8's to their customers at the BMW Welt. The i8 is on schedule to break our preconceived notions of what a "green" car is. I envy these first eight customers, of the i8. The i series cars are breaking new ground - and it's an exciting time for BMW to be leading the way into the future.

Totally love the i8. I can't believe I'm saying this, but the i3 is starting to grow on me. The wheels and skinny tires have to go, but other than that it was actually fun to drive.

I like the i3 as well and I could see myself owning one down the line. The instant torque from the i3 is amazing, only could imagine how it will be in the i8. The i8 will continue to be a dream....

Here is a link to the German i8 wiki, with photos and video of the customer delivery event. Not expecting anything as elaborate when I take delivery here in the U.S., but I'm sure the excitement level will be the same.

Nice event but I'll be wearing jeans and a nice polo or t-shirt, much more Clarkson in style, they would have just asked me to pick mine up in the back there. Glad they are out in the wild. Late Aug, Sept can't come quickly enough.

Yeah, delivered to people whom don't have jobs... & celebrity status for buying a car..? I just don't get it...

Or is this car for people who are too uppity for a Lambo..? Seems like a lot of fanfare for a delivery. Too much "Me" involved in the I-series, does each customer get a mini-video of themselves being presented an I-car..?

I guess I don't understand the image thing, but Miami Vice..?

This event is for those who have most likely have the means to purchase any car they could possible want. I am sure that they have some form of statues to get the first 8 i8's delivered. But who cares???

Leather guy looks more like an Orange or yellow Lambo driver. I would bet he's got one in his stable. Nice cars nonetheless

And did the guy in the last set of photos put his shoe on the (customer) car for the photo?

$hit, all the BMW "fans" hating BMW's these days kills me. Haters gonna hate.

If this car was 80k I would have ordered one instead of the new M in a heartbeat. Nothing looks like it on the road today. The tesla is a very nice car but this is something different & special. Even debated getting an i3 as a daily cause they are just so unique.

The i8 as tested by Road & Track did 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds, 1/4 mile in 12.3s at 114.4mph.

http://www.roadandtrack.com/cm/roada...tWorksheet.pdf

So, how is the i8 slower than the Tesla P85 again?

Further, the Tesla, if I'm not mistaken, is governed at 133mph, whereas the i8 is governed at 155mph.

In every way conceivable, the Tesla is slower than the i8.

That's not even beginning to talk about weight and handling. Let's see them do a run in the canyons together... not to mention there is zero comparison in the looks department. I'll take an i8 over the electrocuted bastard child of a Hyundai and a Kia any day, thanks!

---

One note though, if the discussion is about electric cars, then yes, Tesla is the fastest. The i8 is a hybrid, not an electric car. You can actually drive it across the country and on long road trips without recharging, since the battery will keep charge from the ICE. These 2 cars really have nothing in common. Though, in terms of pure performance specs, the i8 is faster as tested by R&T.

The car sells itself without all this pretentious "brand image" stuff going on. The car in a vacuum of marketing and hype is amazing. The design, the engineering, etc. are all great. Then I see the marketing material, the events, the kind of image of buyer they want to project and I am completely turned off. I don't want to have any part of that. It's not enough to make me not want the car but it's the same reason I have avoided Ferraris and Lambos to this point. Both companies make amazing cars but the majority of owners are THE WORST type of people. People I don't want to be casually associated with in any way, shape, or form.

I'm sure some of those people are very nice, down to Earth, and BMW probably asked everyone invited to adhere to a dress code or at least told them there would be a lot of pictures/press but it still makes my eyes roll backwards.

I'm buying the i8 because it's amazing in it own right...but it's still a car. Here's hoping my dealer doesn't turn the delivery into what looks like a cancer research charity dinner.
