There is a niche and I can't quite put my finger on it but lets call them the greener wealthy. Those that have made their money in new technology, architecture, or renewable energy projects. Even Hollywood would fall in love with this car - the "Fisker Karma crowd. Just guessing but either way a good way for BMW to get some looks, whether or not it ends on poster wall as a dream car is another story.

According to Autocar, BMW is targeting the 911 4S which starts at over $100K. But this has the ability to seat four people while weighing less than 3300lb, and offering E92 M3 levels of performance with the ability to return 95mpg. Very impressive indeed.

In parallel they could work on a more impressive electric drive train that then rolls into the platform?

Oh and at 3300lb it still seems heavy.

It does look good though!
The point is there are hundreds of R8/911 etc out there. Why copy everyone else when you can be innovative and be the first auto maker to make an (mass market) electric sports car.

You think so? I'm not convinced. Tesla owners seem to wear the fact that they're not burning any hydrocarbons (from the car) like a badge of honor. The i8 is a hybrid and wouldn't quite scratch that itch.

I would buy one in a minute, and I can't wait for all the wraps to be taken off. Can't wait to see the i8's & i3's on the road too.

The figures are looking better and better, and the output of that 1.5L 3-cyl engine is very impressive. Thanks for posting the update!

Looking forward to next month for the full reveal!

She will look great in the garage next to the X6M
I love it too, I'm just scared as to what the price is going to be. The i3 is $45K. This will easily be more than double that...

agreed! this car will turn heads.

on a side note, that chassis may lead to a future super car, but only time will tell. if the car sells well, we may see an Mi8

under 3300 pounds, and some skinny tires with some decent hp/tq, this thing sounds like a recipe for fun!!!

+1

Performance isn't all that surprising (at least from the numbers), neither is weight to be honest, and neither is that 6 speed automatic.

BMW needs a car that really shows off their capabilities in the performance and passion world, because there isn't too much of that going on.

BMW.. I know you are going to build this car anyways. But how about you try to recreate a modern version of the M1 soon, where it delivers that true Ultimate Driving experience. I'm no fortune teller, but I have a pretty good feeling that it will sell extremely well and give your other cars a boost in sales.

Hopefully one day BMW will be in the S class in Forza...

AWD?

Super skinny civic tires?

0-60 in a molasses 4.5 sec?

6spd AUTO?

I thought this was a BMW supercar?

Not sure why they couldn't have just used a N55 engine or a newer twin turbo I6 instead an I3 and when someone wanted the performance you got 330 hp from the engine plus the electric for almost 500 hp and 500 foot pounds. With it being 3200 pounds and a great looking car, that would have been a true competitor with a ton of regular sports cars but now this thing loses out to any of the current contenders let alone the new breed to come
Well said

I love the design and innovation that went into the performance and efficiency of the i8. Sub 4.5 sec 0-60, AWD handling/ acceleration benefits, and it will achieve 80+ mpg. Bravo BMW!

Lets say you are out for spirited canyon drive. How many miles until you are driving only on the 1.5L engine.

I guess...if they want to spend more than twice what a Telsa S cost (start at $60k).

And Telsa is still an all electric car.

That is almost sci-fi. Incredible technology.
Only what's with that 6 speed auto. Is it a new box? Is it the X6M's one?

I wish to see this kind of specs in the 5-series sized sedan, but not in car like this. I mean it. Especially - it would be nice to have 1.5 tons weight back as it was. And oh well, almost forgot - 35 miles of electric range is a joke, right?
