Ha, saw that first clip on the Road & Track site earlier today. Was laughing at how staged the whole thing is, although it's a known fact most of the "spy videos" are not really spy videos, for some reason this one was particularly staged feeling.

That would have been cool though to be there on PCH and have seen the i8 rolling around in blue camo.

Wow, the sound is so underwhelming. What a horrible sound from a $130k car

I think I'll be limited my sports car purchases to cars made up to about 2016. The future isnt looking too bright in terms of emotion. I only say 2016 because I want to see the next M3 CSL/GTS and the 911 GT3 RS...and even the GT3 is not as interesting as the 997 GT3.

Sigh.

On topic. It looks cool and I love that BMW is pushing the future. They really are ahead of the world right now in terms of hybrid design and material manufacturing technology. With that said... DO NOT WANT

I think the first two replies are from competing manufacturer trolls.

1. Neither video looks staged
2. The car sounds pretty good considering the device used to record the sound in Matt's hand looks like a iphone.
3. The i8, for what it is, is impressive all the way around. If you don't think so then show your marvel of engineering hybrid offering.

I'm not a "competing manufacturer troll" and it looks staged to me. I'm mean they keep accelerating back and forth in front of the highway patrol....lol? Maybe it isn't staged, but sure looks like it is. Either way, I think it actually sounds pretty good and does look to be pretty quick!

Um, yeah, I work for Tesla and I am here to sabotage the authenticity of spy videos. Damn, you have uncovered my secret trolling purpose.

If you check my posting history in the i8 forums you'll see I'm one of the i8 fanboys and I love and want the car.

I was just pointing out the first video (on PCH) looked staged because the test driver kept going back and forth doing drive by's for the camera yet the camera guy was trying to make it sound like they "caught the i8" and he wanted to get away and not be filmed. There has been much discussion as to the general authenticity and manufacturer involvement of certain spy videos, and this is what I was referring to. Sure, I could be wrong, of course.

Beside that I didn't even comment on the second video at the 'Ring, nor on the i8 or its sound, other than it would have been cool to be there on PCH and see the test mule in person.

But for the record, I think it sounds good considering it is an inline 3/EV hybrid. People expecting it to sound like a Ferrari are usually the most disappointed.

I actually quite like the stealthy understatedness of the i8 sound.

And, what Mr.Metak2you said

"this guy pulled into the wrong parking lot"

Lol.

I think it sounds decent, but I thought it sounded better in that EVO video done a few months back. Although, that could have just been because of the recording quality.

The M4 that's been testing near me drove the same stretch of road about 7 or 8 times in the space of 3-4 hours, going back and forth. No spy photos have appeared of that, so maybe they do it to be predictable, but not necessarily staged... or maybe it's just part of the testing routine.

That is a somewhat typical testing practice to drive the same road over and over. Just look at the past videos of camo'ed BMWs.

The guy is Matt Farah, a journalist from The Smoking Tire, (youtube). That's the way he talks, check out his videos.

All good points on the testing. I am sure there would be some crowd gathering when these test cars are doing their thing, particularly over and over on the same stretch of road.

+100000

I will be limiting mine to 2011 which is the last year of the 997 GT3. I lost interest in BMW after they sold out.

The first undisguised i8s are now on the streets .

Some lucky people have been there to witness its presence.

There is no denying that there is nothing else quite like the i8 or the i3 on roads today from a visual standpoint.

Sounded good in the Evo test drive. A lot like an early 911.

Which rear-engined one? They're both rear-engine.

Not exactly. It has a front motor and a rear motor. But only a rear engine.

Probably sound ok inside the car as they will enhance the sound via the speakers. Personally I don't like that feature on new BMWs

Alot of higher end car companies are doing it these days, (in various ways). It only seems to be BMW that's taking slack for doing it.... hmmm
