And perhaps due low energy left (?!) fuel tank cover did not release. Even though I pushed opening button (left door) several time, cover didn't open. Then I dissected manually the whole cover unit including the frame, fuses and mechanism by itself. The cover got off actually very easily, far too easy to do that. Then I refueled the car (38,5 litres when completely empty), installed the cover unit again and drove home. At home cover opened with no problem.

Now, a good question: if you drive your car really emply, no fuel, very little battery, does EcoPro mode drive all electronics out so that even fuel tank cover won't open? Beware of this possible problem.

Photo about dashbord before refuel. Quite little range left. 542 km driven with one tank.
You have left me impressed with the performance of your car is very advanced. Tell you what, I have little knowledge on the subject of cars I BMW. Enjoy your car much and I wish you much luck with.

That's rather worrying, because on my second i8 test drive, the same happened. The car's petrol fuel filler flap would not open at all.

We had enough fuel to get back though, so I forgot all about it.

This remained unexplained as the dealer said it worked fine the next day.

I guess the solution here is don't run out of gas? I'll be honest that I hadn't even thought of doing that until I read it here.

I am willing to bet it's a software issue.

You press the fuel open button on driver side. This sends signal to depressurize the fuel tank. There is a control module which sends a signal once the fuel tank is depressurized; once received, computer unlocks the fuel filler door.

Sounds like this system might have a bug in it somewhere.

The manual says you press the release then wait for it to depressurize the tank and it will prompt you on the screen when it's ready. Probably have to hold the button so it doesn't register a erroneous press. It also has to be completely off. I foresee a good number of issues related to people not completely shutting the car down. Tesla has problems with it and Mercedes has been having trouble reminding people to put recent cars into park since it's a separate button away from the gear selection lever (cars rolling in neutral).

David, my money would be on you being correct here. Sounds very much like what would explain the odd behaviour.

Prepare to expect a LOT of software bugs, issues and updates over the next year on the i cars.

We waited a good 3 minutes at the pump trying to open the flap before giving up. So, I suppose the jury is still out on this one.

Even the i specialist trained dealer with me had no idea what was wrong, so there is little hope for us mere mortals who will be owners

Needs a fix either way.

Hey I'm a software guy ... if there were no bugs ... we'd all be out of job!

"Hey that feature worked on my simulator i8... oops, I put 'true' where it should have been 'false' ... hope no one got stranded!"

( Automotive software version of developer's last words, "It works on my machine!" )

Congrats, looks cool! Hope I will see you in the traffic here in Helsinki

Did you get a an extended warranty, from Finland I got 6 years/120 000km for my BMW, it was maximum and it is a Swedish guarante I think. So I was wondering if it is available for the i8?

BTW do you have the laser led lights, how are they compared to normal leds?

Hi, and thanks. I have no idea what exactly warranty covers. Usually all new BMWs have worked well and warranty has covered small problems in them. 120 000 km is just a bit over 2 years driving for me and I think i8 will clear it our with no problem.

I don't have lasers in my car. They are not yet available. And pretty useless since they are just long distance lights....at least when you think about 10 000e price

Pitkis and Quilucru: Any overall impressions after a couple weeks of driving? Also curious to know if you've yet to encounter any problems getting in or out of the car due to someone parking too close next to it.

I've drive close to 3000 km now. No problems with parking. Other cars take nice distance, they just don't want to get close to this magnificent machine. And sometimes when I have drive to narrow place, opening the door is not problem. In case you are too close, you can still open toe door partially and exit i8 with no problem even the door is just half open.

What comes to driving, I just had some session with a lot of truck overtakes. And used all the resources to make my trip. Really nice, extremely stable overtaking performance. Somehow you feel that after initial acceleration you get some extra boost at 130-140 km/h if you still keep pedal to the metal. I had no time to check gauges, but at least you felt some kind of like power surge after 2-3 seconds full power. Even tought the initial acceleration from 80 km/h is good already. eBoost perhaps?

i8 goes at freeway like rails. At 150 km/h you can take your hands off the wheel and car goes easily 500-1000 metres on it's own lane without steering it. Very impressive, especially for a sportscar. And any moment you take wheel action, it's still featherlight to steer with razor-sharp accuracy. Simply excellent to drive.

I have had no refuel problems since the incident I described here. If you press fuel tank button, there really comes a small sign to dashboard after 1-2 seconds. And that's it. I hope all goes fine from now on.

Tomorrow I go to wash my love and get a close connection all over. There no better way to understand your car's design language than slowly hand wash it.

Thanks for the update. Sounds like you're loving it (who wouldn't) and it's met your expectations. Also pleased to hear about the ingress/egress. I've got a bit of a tight fit in my garage, so have been concerned about that if the door is partially blocked.

Wash it with care and enjoy every minute of it. More of us on this forum from the US to join you and Quilucru in the not too distant future.

Thanks Pitkis - i8 beauty

Appreciate your thoughts, feelings and findings, Pitkis. I totally agree with you regarding hand washing. It's the most intimate way to feel and learn every facet of a new and beautiful body. (car, that is!)
To me, it's part of the great joy of keeping a beautiful automobile.
Enjoy your new lady and please, keep us appraised, as we await our own cars.

Here's my darling in hand wash. I did some new findings during wash - I'll try to shoot them tomorrow.

The the circus goes on every time you park. People just abandon their cars in the middle of parking lot in order to run to my i8 for photoshoot. Driving Ferrari was a small media event every time but living with i8 is completely another story.

i8 works quite well as a DD. Shopping is no problem, rear can eat four plastic bags full of food. Or 1,5 litre x20 Cokes + 48 beer cans. And you still have room left nicely.

I have also noted an interesting detail. i8 doesn't smell like new cars. It had a typical "new car" smell just for a while, maybe a week or couple of days, then it smells nothing, just fresh. Ecological dyes, natural leather, lack of chemicals and sustainable product chain is perhaps behind all this. Quite impressive. This is really different car.

Btw, I have leafed throught menus and followed consumption. At 132 km/h constant speed at freeway the engine consumes 6,7 litres per 100 km.

A typical consumption graph in subaruban drive. This time I went to car wash. Some driving at highway, smaller streets also included. eDrive goes full electric easily in lower speeds under 60 km/h.

The wing is complex and very multidimensional to understand. It's worth noting that the cockpit of the car is kind of like round from the rear, similar to Ferrari 599. Side panels do a round bending towards rear window, under the wing that's pictured here.

All it lacks is active aero to make it even more complex...
