Automatic shifts in sport mode

Dumb question: can somebody confirm that there is indeed a way to get fully automatic shifts in sport mode? The dealer's english is questionable and he confused me today.

Just stay hard on the gas and it will upshift when it hits redline.

Huh? Sports mode *is* automatic mode. If you switch to "manual", I know it will at least shift from 2>3 automatically at redline even in manual, not sure about higher gears.

Right. Brain-fart. My Bad.

In Sports Mode, it's automatic.

If, while in Sports Mode, you shift up or down (paddles or stick), then it enters Manual (Sports) Mode, where it will attempt to hold the gear you have chosen. If you go too slow, it will downshift to prevent you from lugging the engine. If you go too fast for that gear, it will up-shift to prevent over-revving the engine.

skinrock, In Manual Mode, it will do all shifts for you if you forget... (not that I'd ever forget... nope, not me...) 1 -> 2 -> 3 -> 4 -> 5 ... not sure about 5 -> 6 because I think it will hit vMax (155 mph) in 5th before a shift to 6th would be needed.

...and once in manual mode, if you hold the up shift paddle it switches it back to auto mode ;-)

Handy info on the return to auto from manual by holding the paddle - useful when I don't have both hands free.

Anybody prefer the older paddles where each paddle could shift up (pull) or down (push)? I loved it 'cos I could be swigging on a coke and driving manual at the same time.

Personally, I don`t find the paddle shifts in the i8 as effective as other cars I have used. It`s a bit too `seamless` if you know what I mean ? It doesn't help that the torque is so linear. In a C63 for example, you can shift up just in the sweet spot, and get that rush of power from the next gear, in this you don't. Having said that, if you just drive the i8 in `sport` mode auto...it is very good.

I know what you mean but probably something to get used to with electrification and 'fill-in' motors plus huge torque.
My old 635d had around 500 lbs ft of torque (after a re-map and it just pulled like a train from about 1500 rpm, gearshifts just felt like a little jerk and the power just kept coming - similar to the i8.

I love the idea of a high-revving big V8 or V10, but not UK fuel and tax bills

Yep, my last 2 cars ( C63 507 edition & RS4 B8) loved em both to bits, but I am in the middle of renovating/extending my house, and the running costs of these V8`s is a joke. One day I may venture back but if the i8 is a sign of things to come, then maybe not........
