Would you still have bought an i8 if the doors didn't go up?
I'm curious to see everyone's (hopefully) honest answer to this question since a lot of people seem to have the opinion that the i8 is overpriced for what you get. My personal and honest answer is no; I would've gotten a McLaren MP4-12c or 570s if they didn't.

The doors made me looked at the car and got interested. Gave me that Supercar feeling. Otherwise, I would have gone to a more powerful car. R8 V10 or the NSX.

The doors do give you more of a super car feeling and add a lot to the i8 experience by making it a more unique automobile. Definitely would have bought it with any type of door. Don’t understand how anyone can say the car is overpriced for what you get. All other carbon fiber and aluminum hybrid sports cars are two to five times more money. The i8 is a bargain and inexpensive to maintain!
Making a lot of exhaust noise and getting 12mpg got very old for me many years ago. Although sometimes I do miss the exhaust noise...and telling inquiring gawkers that the car has a 3 cyl 1500cc engine sometimes seems a little underwhelming. They do perk up when I tell them that I get nearly 50mpg on average. But....when I’m behind the wheel all that goes away and I can appreciate the car as a terrific automobile with multiple personalities. Sometimes I talk with Tesla owners who love their cars. But a Tesla is really just a big 5 passenger, 5000 pound tub with a rail frame, air shocks like My father had on his 69 Buick....with a battery and a couple of electric motors. The innovative drivetrain, suspension, design, unlimited range, etc. of the i8 is far superior in my opinion. Last edited by Coastali8; 01-17-2018 at 09:05 PM.. |

Mid-way...I like the electric feature because of my commute I hardly have to visit a gas station more than once every 2 months. When I had the 750 I would be going twice a month. Both the 911 and AMG GT don't provide that feature....But if the i8's shape and doors were not as unique, I would never have given the car a chance therefore would have never experienced the real life benefits.
Also have to add love the instant heating of the electric car in the winter with the climatize feature on the Connected App the car is 72 degrees when I get in the car after work even though ambient temp is hovering in the teens. One gets spoiled very easily. That will be a big priority feature in consideration on the next car. |

Doors definitely help as this is the cheapest car you can get with doors up. Even without the doors it is beautifully designed vehicle. I don't think it's overpriced. We are all just so used to the exhaust notes and gas guzzlers that sometime it's hard to see the value in i8.
I will still buy it with normal doors. I also love the fact that I never have to pay for anything for service or maintenance. |

I think I accidentally voted Yes on mobile, because polls suck on mobile...and I meant No.

I'd say the doors pushed me over the top. I bet if it had regular doors I would probably have a sport sedan of some sort right now, instead of the i8.
However, if I knew how much I would enjoy the car as a daily driver, I would have purchased it with any type of doors. So I'm voting no, by a smidgen. |

Doors were a gimmick since BMW wanted a back seat and didn't want the doors to be too long. So it made them too low and the entry very inconvenient.
If BMW had given us more range in the roadster I would have bougnt one. But BMW is committed to making boring and bland cars these days. And is afraid to do anything daring or outside the box.
