i would guess the same as a Mini Cooper S
Odd question why - I don't even know how to access the engine it would be nice to admire the technology An electronic oil level indicator in the vehicle information would give some confidence, though I'm sure a message would appear if the level was low. |

Odd. I've looked through all the documentation I can find about the car. Nothing states the oil capacity.
Maybe I'll have to drain it, and see.

I asked a tech at my dealership and he told me about 4.5 quarts. If your dealer charged you for 7, either he overfilled or you paid for oil you didn't get. Wouldn't be the first time for either. If your oil level indicator in iDrive says the level is okay, I'm guessing you were overcharged.

Checked the Oil level and it seems to be correct. Checked with my SA thereafter, which his internal records show that a little over 2 quarts was used to top off the engine while performing various tests with the turbos, which ultimately needed to be replaced. The remaining oil was utilized after the turbo chargers were replaced. Unfortunately, my service report omitted the aforementioned detail and only reflected that the dealer used up to 7 quarts of oil under the line item of oil and filter change. In light of this, the 4.5 quarts indicated by your technician appears to be correct. Mystery solved.

Just changed the oil and filter. Filled with Ravenol 5w/30. Put in 4 liters (4.22 quarts) and then drove the car for 30 minuets to do the warm oil edrive electronic check. The check showed exactly to the proper full mark. The quote about the capacity being the same as a Mini Cooper S, I don’t believe is correct because the Cooper of the same year uses a different oil filter than the i8. Also if you research Cooper forms they recommend oil changes every 5000 miles OR LESS... stating that in their experience there are fewer issues with the turbo chargers with frequent oil changes. The job was extremely easy. Couldn’t reset the “oil service required” edrive text so I guess I live with that until I have a reason to visit the BMW dealer and have it reset then.

It’s really easy.. Remove drain plug at bottom of oil pan. (turn counterclockwise) Remove drain plug in bottom of oil filter canister then remove canister. Pop in new filter and lubed O ring. Reassemble everything and add oil. Helpful hint: Place pan under where oil comes out to avoid a big mess. Last edited by Coastali8; 01-17-2018 at 07:41 PM.. |

BrokenVert; I always wondered about oil temperatures with these cars. For some it would be easy to be lulled into a false sense that the car is warmed up having driven in electric (or eco mode) for a few minutes, then popping the car into sport mode and driving hard with engine being completely cold. |

Found out how to reset the service required text and light.
1) Don’t depress any pedal. 2) Press Stop/ Start button. 3) Press and hold trip meter button in the lower left corner of the instrument cluster for approximately 10 seconds until the first service point text appears on the instrument cluster. 4) Repeatedly press the button until the service point appears that you want to reset. 5) The text will display “reset possible “ 6) Press the button again for 3 seconds and the display will show “reset ?” 7) Press the button a third time for 3 seconds and the display will show “reset in progress “ and a progress bar will appear. 8) The Service light and text in edrive has been successfully reset. 9) Press the stop/ start button to turn off readiness and your done.
