I don't think it's negative sentiment to voice a pretty common opinion....we're all pretty realistic and no bs on bmw forums! Lol.

I agree with everything else you stated!

The pricing on this car is insane. BMW loaned me one to try out while my M4 was in. What a disappointment, I guess i liked the doors the first day and the gas mileage?

Ok I'm not defending the price here but 570s spiders are nearly $250k cars...

If it was 100% Electric I'd seriously consider it.

Until then it's not... Born electric !!

The i8 Roadster is absolutely beautiful, but not worth MSRP in my opinion. I backed out of my order with a June production. My dealer was going to discount the MSRP but not enough to make the i8 Roadster worth it to me. Like others have said, $50,000 less than MSRP and I would buy it.

I think BMW really missed the boat on this one. They could have put in an electric motor with much better range, like the Acura NSX. They hit the mark on the design, but totally missed it with the lack of performance.

I know I'll be jealous when I see one on the road, but I hope I pull up next to one at a red light with my X5M and I'll be the one smiling as I look in my rear view mirror lol.

I think you should buy whatever you want to buy. It's not a car for everyone at that price. I certainly would not buy it but only cause I think it should out perform a lot of other cars much cheaper that it but it doesn't.

In my opinion BMW made this car with a certain idea that the masses are not really ready to value. That's why the resale values have tanked and why I would not get one. But everyone's values are different and I believe you should go after whatever YOU want regardless of other people's opinions. So with that, OP congrats on your order I am positive you will enjoy it.

LOL. It's in the atrium of the Entertainment One building. The atrium is used a lot for stuff like this. I heard BMW was holding some fancy launch event there. Also the auto show starts here this weekend.

They also could have put a real engine in the thing - and made it much more of a halo type car, aka something that performs as well as the price tag suggests that it should (as you say above). Something awesome like a V10 would have been insane, but even a straight 6 would have improved the performance big time.

There's no doubt that the design is beautiful, but once again - missed opportunity IMO.

Couldn't agree more. To each his own, right? I came to understand my own way back in 1972 when I saw my first Lamborghini Miura . It was love at first sight, but at $20,000 (new in '72), I couldn't ever imagine being able to afford such a luxury. Fast forward some 45 years (I know I'm dating myself), and with the help of a successful business career and some fortuitous stock options, I now have a 2019 coupe on order. Still a very expensive car, mind you, but pretty reasonable when considering I'm getting two cars for the price of one: 1) an all-electric, around town commuter vehicle that makes me feel good about not polluting the environment or burning dinosaur residue, and 2) a sexy sports car that is perfect (to me) for zipping through the twisties on Southern California's canyon roads. However, convincing the wife that spending some $2K/mo. (approximate lease cost) makes sense is another matter. To her, a car is simply for transportation. To which I reply, that's like telling Kim Kardashian that clothes are simply a means to keep your body protected from the elements, so just put on a potato sack. Well, you can imagine the reaction that got .

Anyway, I'm counting down the weeks until my dream car arrives. Who knows, maybe some day a young kid will see my car and start dreaming about what his future might hold .

I don't think that's the reason. It just comes down to performance : price ratio. The i8 looks stunning and while it certainly has an interesting powertrain, but the overall performance is way behind other cars of the same price or those priced way less. Performance enthusiasts stuck with Porsche and the lot, and the tech geeks stuck with Tesla.

Now if it were a fully electric rocket like the Model S it would have carved a nice little niche for itself.

Maybe, but with the terrible SAVs, watering down the M brand and whoring the M badges out their MO seems to be entertaining the masses right?

Agree to disagree, but the trickle down effect for tech and style is definitely intended for the masses, so why not make it attractive to the masses to begin with?

Um, again, "no"...

In order for the i8 to garner mass appeal they would have to make it a practical car. The i8 is in no way a practical car. If they tried to make it practical, it simply wouldn't be an i8. Maybe more like an i3.

I wouldn't want an i8 if it had the practicality required for mass market appeal. There are other vehicles which already meet this requirement. My ModelX is MUCH more practical than any EV BMW makes... I don't need ANOTHER practical EV (which the i8 certainly ISN'T). If I wanted mass market practicality at a reasonable price I'ld buy a Model3
